takin care of my hair

i am 19 years old and i am currently in the process of growing my hair long, i was wondering if any of u guys or women can give me some advice on how 2 take care of it in the early stages and keep it healthy lookin for when it grows longer.I have dark straight shiny hair,the sides r touching my ears and the back is starting to grow out nicely.Any advice?? thanx Mick
