Wavy Mess to Curly Hair

Hi, I have a wavy mess. I think it is partly due to the awakard stage. It is pretty straight until it reaches my ears. There is where the disaster occurs. The end of my hair reaches up and actually touches my eye curling up. I think this is annoying. I have tried using a straightening iron but that does not work. Also I heard it causes a lot of damage. Now I want it to be curly but not WAVY and a mess. I want defined curls and stuff. Any suggestions on how to achieve this? Someone told me after you wash your hair, put in hair gel, comb out, and crunch the hair. Then apply some hair spray. Will this work? And can you tell me the whole process in your words? Thanks a lot. I really appreciate your help.

: Try a product by Rusk called Str8. It's an anti-frizz/anti-curl lotion. Depending on how much you use and how much you blow dry your hair (don't be afraid to use a drier, the heat helps activate the product) you can achieve different levels of straightness or curliness. It adds body to your hair and smells kinda nice. I've tried it and it works pretty darn good.
