Not stopping but pausing?

Hi,
I have a friends party coming soon (the end of November), and for personal reasons (as always connected with opposite sex) I would prefer not to go with hair looking like Bob Dylan's and Columbo's love child :)
So I was wondering, If I am prepared to take a slight prolonging of the overall time to reach that much desired "proper" long hair look, wether it is worthwhile geting it trimmed. The main aim is to add some shape and generally make it look a bit better and easier to maintain, but of course not losing to much length.
Are these conflicting goals?
I know it probably depends a lot on the hairdresser involved. But I can be a forceful pretty character so I won't stand for too much messing.
Alternatively I could always get a hat.

graeme,
i feel if your hair is really out of shape and in need of a trim, then by all means get one.periodical trims and regular hair cuts can certainly work against you when trying to grow long hair, but if it looks bad, then get a trim! we don;t need any long hairs lookin' bad!

You did not mention what your current length is.
Can you pull it back in a ponytail yet? Even a short stub will give you the appearance of more control, without having to resort to a trim.
Otherwise, "mjtoo"'s advice is reasonable. Just go to a stylist you trust. Some think "trim" means at least an inch!
Caveat emptor (let the buyer beware)!
