I have grown a beard, not very long but it makes a different, and I put my hair usually in a ponytail (hair length between 40 - 50 cm).
Many women today have a short hair cut similar like the usual man's hair style today, but why should all human beings look like Roman soldiers?
As I was young I even was proud to be mistaken for a woman in view of my hair (it happened sometimes from the back).

yeh? kool-but i dont want to wear a pony tail and cant grow out a beard, so is there a style that makes it look more manly, or not to condition it so it looks abit more straggly and unhealthy so its not like a womans?

Well, you could go without a shirt! :-) Hair that just hangs there carries no sex message one way or the other, so you have to convey your gender message in other ways. If your body doesn't scream "male" all over it, you have to look to clothing.
You have two clothing options. One is to wear stuff so tight no one questions you. :-) The other is to wear clothing that is especially male looking. Since so many women wear ordinary men's clothes nowadays, this option (Hell's Angels garb, mullet haircuts, bandannas in a band, and the like) may be a bit more macho than you want. Maybe just leaning in such directions will push you over the edge and thus be all you need.

Don't worry about that, most people still think in strict stereotypes. I've got very short hair at the mo, and all those old ladies call me "Sir". Not that I've got a masculine figure or something....

Sorry, I don't know what to do and so I can only relate to the advice about clothes. Unhealthy looking hair is not an alternative that I would follow, it could work in some cases but not always.

Another alternative is just don't worry about it. Sounds like you
need a little boost in your self confidence. Hang in there, james
don't sweat the small stuff. If you are confident in who you are,
then why give a damn what others think?

well spoken (well, written). why alter your look to appease anyone but yourself?
