growing from bald advice

Hey guys,
I used to have long hair -- about half way doen my back. Abnout a year ago I cut it and I have been shaving it for about 5 months. I'm starting to feel the desire to grow it back and was wondering if anyone has any advice for me?
When I grew it the last time, it was growing from a faily long starting point. What's it like to start from nothing? Should I get regular hair cuts along the ways?
