Explanation of relaxing?

Can someone please explain the process of hair relaxing? Pros/Cons? I have very thick hair and am attempting to grow it long. Would a procedure such as relaxing help my look and possible make it thinner or freer so my hair can actually blow crazy in the wind. Right now, it doesn't even move when it's windy. Thanks.

Hi Chris,
Here it is from a hairdressers point of view..Relaxing is the same chemical process as perming only without the use of rods..The hair is heated by the alkaline state of the chemical causing the hairshaft to swell..This breaks down the chical bonds of you hair called polypeptide chains and reposition them thus causing your hair to be straight..
If you want to have this done I would not reccomnend a relaxer that is used on ethnic hair..Assuming you are caucasion..Go to your hairdresser and ask to have your hair straightened using a product called Vavoom Straight Talk..The process takes about 2 hours and it involves the same steps as a perm, minus rods of course! It will run you some money as well..The salon where I once worked charged 70.00 for the service..Haircut included..
The pros are you will have straight hair..The cons are as with any chemical applied to the hair some dryness will occur..Keep in mind also your new growth will come in curly so you will need to have the roots done from time to time..
Good Luck
Dan

In your message you said that one would have to have the new growth "relaxed" from time to time. Does that mean that the hair that is "relaxed" will stay straight? Are you familiar with the process offered by Fanstastic Sam's...I think they charge about thirty dollars.

That is correct..the relaxed hair will stay straight..the new growth will come in curly..but as explained in the earlier post the weight will make it so it only has to be done on occaison...kind of like getting dark roots when you are a blond..the ends stay blond the roots do not..I'm sorry I am not familiar w/ Fantastic Sams services..
Good Luck
Only the ends should be necessary

As your hair gets longer, the ends will be the only part that would possibly curl up a lot. What is your hair now will be the end of the hair when it's long. The sheer weight of the hair will keep the new, unrelaxed hair from curling out.
