Hair care by not shampooing?

I am growing my thick hair out. Right now it's about 4 inches and I was told by a barber that in order to get rid of dead ends I should get a trim every 6-8 weeks. I've decided not to thin my hair, but am still debating whether or not to trim just a tiny bit of it like my barber said to do. But all of you'll say I shouldn't and say that just taking good care of my hair will keep it from becoming split. But you'll also say that I should only shampoo and condition once a week. Won't that screw with my hair's health and slow down its growth.

Chris,
Just my opinion here, but I think the trim or not to trim question is really up to you. I usually go for a trim when I start to see split ends. If it's just one or two...I snip em. If it starts to become more of a problem...it's time for a trim. As for getting rid of the dead ends...from my understanding...hair is "dead," so you don't have to worry about killing it. :-) Shampooing and Conditioning is the same...(you have to figure out what works best for you). I can't go more than three days without looking like a greaser - just figured out recently though that a condition instead of a shampoo sometimes does the trick. :-) Good Luck!

I have waist length hair and have to wash it
every day, otherwise it looks like crap (all oily
and grungy). If want complaints from your
employer, go ahead and only wash your hair
once a week.
I get complaints from my scalp!!!

If I don't wash my hair for a week, my scalp starts itching like crazy, and then the dandriff attacks!

for products and services that you really don't need!
Here's a few things that work for me. Check out the picture I posted below for the results. It's a little known fact, but your own natural oils are the best conditioner your hair has! I typically have rather dry hair and skin, so your results may vary. I used to shampoo my hair about once a week, and go through 2, sometimes 3 "cycles" of rinsing and shampooing to rid my hair of all oils. I would wash all my hair, all the way down my back. Then I would put in profuse amounts of conditioner. Yet still have problems with tangles. My girlfriend said I was doing it all wrong
I usually shampoo now every 2 days or so, but I use a rather small amount. Usually about the size of a nickel on my hand, maybe a little more. I only wash the hair on my scalp though, and I only go through one "cycle". I then only use a light amount of conditioner. This way some of the oils stay in my hair. Because I am washing it more frequently, it doesn't really get a chance to build up too much oil, but enough to be beneficial. The hair that runs down my back normally stays dry. It only gets a thorough rinsing because I try to keep the shampoo off it.
I have noticed the tangle problems have been greatly reduced...and with it, the split ends. Speaking of split ends, I have always left them there , until they get out of hand. I noticed if I cut them off, the good hair that is left doesn't take any time to become that way too. So I just leave it, or else I would not have any hair left!

I've been growing my hair for two years from an all-but-shaved head when I was 16. Thankfully I've been out of the 'bad hair phase' for a while now!
I've only ever had one trim but I know for a fact that washing my hair made it feel dry and fragile even if I used a conditioner. I've now been rinsing it regularly in just lukewarm water for about 5 months and the results are fantastic. My hair reaches to my lower back and I've not seen any split-ends. It does feel strange when you first start going without shampoo but it balances out after a couple of months. Basically, I think trimming is unnecessary if you just let your natural oils nourish your hair. The gentle rinsing in water will shift any pollutants and dust. Hair trims just aren't going to the, umm, "root" of the problem.

Thank you for sharing that Matt, it is very interesting what you said, i have been thinking about doing something like that for awhile, and now, knowing that someone else did that and it is pleased with the results i think i will give it a try.
