at the moment i have a skinhead but im considering growing my hair long.i want to know when i grow my hair longer what do i actually ask for at the hairdressers so my hair grows out evenly instead of been longer at the back than at the sides and top. also my hair is real thick what else do i need to ask the hairdresser to do to get my hair even. i want the hair to lie fairly close to my face but this might be diffcult cause of my hair type. if any of you long hair pros have any advice it would be much appreciated

Tell the hairdresser exactly what you told us. Just make it real clear what you want. In my opinion though, you'd be better off to just start growing it and not getting trims. Sure, the back will be longer but if you get it trimmed you are just delaying the growing process. If you can tough it out and just wait till the sides are long enough, then you can cut the back to be even with it. Just watch for split ends and that's about it.

Ask for a 90 degree cut, same length all over.
That's basic terminology for one of 4 basic haircuts that all haircutters learn. A 90 degree is simply where you hold the hair at a 90 degree angle from the scalp (straight up), and you cut it at whatever length. Usually it's cut a bit shorter on the sides and back. But for eventually getting it long enough to grow a 'tail, you're going to have to go through an awkward stage where you'll depend on either hats or gel to hold it in place . . . Meantime, tell the cutter what you're doing, and don't let 'em snip off more than 1/4" at a time.
Good luck,
