More Volume On Hair Roots

Hi guys, I have naturally wavy hair. There is one big problem however, my hair does not start wavy until it reaches the ends. So basically, my hair is straight from the roots and turns really wavy at the ends. Therefore, the ends get big. Do you have any tips on getting more volume on the roots? Because I think that could help my problem. I have tried blow-drying my hair upside down but that does not help. It just makes it bigger. Would scrunching my hair with gel help? If so, what is the proper way to scrunch hair? Thank you for your input.
