Regrowing: How to Get It Shaped Correctly?

I'm 17 and used to have long hair. I wanted to regrow it and have hair down my back. My dad wouldn't let me, so I tried to compromise by showing him a sequence from the video game "Metal Gear Solid 2" of a character named Raiden. Seeing Raiden's hair wasn't too long, my dad finally agreed.
Now the question: If I'm going to grow it out, how do I get the same shape that Raiden has? It won't work if I just grow it out without any cuts at all, and if I did get it cut, I'm not sure the stylist would understand how I want the shape to be. So...what exactly do I do?
Thanks for the help! Note that my hair is thicker than Raiden's and has a little bit of wave when it gets long enough.

That's the easy part. Take the photo to the stylist. Together you can work out how you are to transition to the new look.
The tough part is going to be accepting that you will be in a perpetual "awkward stage". That "do" is going to become an instant mess every time you step out into the wind, unless you've put a lot of something on it to plaster it down. Your wavier hair will look nicer than Raiden's, and it will be bulkier, but at his length it's going to give you the frustration of awkward stage hair in spades. The wind will catch it, and if you thin it, the wind will just catch it more.
This is ironic since your dad surely made his comment wanting you to have neat hair. Awkward stage hair is messier than long hair is. When you get to this length, one way to neaten it up will be to grow it on out to shoulder length. :-)
Movie stars have a makeup van nearby to continually neaten their hair, while ordinary folk like us do not, so some styles they have play out very differently in the real world. Keep in mind that most men celebrate the end of the awkward stage with "it will all go into a tail now". Raiden's style is not there.
As long as you're prepared for the extra work it takes to keep this style neat, and you do it, you should enjoy your new look. Hey, it sure beats "short"!

You are seventeen. "Grow" it to Raiden's length. Then when you turn eighteen, who's gonna stop you?
