Thinning hair on one side of head only

Hi, i don't really know how to start this off, but my hair is pretty long, almost shoulder-length, and it's got to the stage where i'm just sick and tired of it and want to cut it, and go short. Trouble is, my hair seems to be thinning badly on the right side of my head (the side where my hair sprouts out from), whereas it seems to be OK on the left side of my head. Others have noticed this apart from myself, and i have to strategically use gel in my hair to try and hide this. But i'm scared to death to get my hair cut, as this may become exposed to an even greater extent.
Do i have a medical problem here? I really do want to cut my hair, but i'm scared i'll look like an even bigger idiot as it'll appear i'm balding...but only on one side of my head. The hair is literally thinner all over the rigth side of my head, and is OK all over the other side. I know it sounds freaky, but it's sadly true.
Please, could somebody help in any way?

I think that you should see a doctor for possible treatment of this condition.
