Length on the side?

Hello. :)
I have been growing my hair for about eight months now and I have a silly question to ask. It's about sideburns and/or hair (where one turns into the other sort of thing...).
Pretend you are wearing glasses (like I do.) Everything below the part that hooks behind your ears I trimmed with my beard trimmer, not realizing that some of it was hair and some if it was sideburns. However, if I look around at other people's hair styles (i.e. women, long-haired men, etc.) I notice that their hair comes below that and hooks around the ear.
It's already eight months of hair growing time that's passed. Should I try to catch up my side hair to the rest of my head, or just leave it? When I have a goatee I don't usually wear sideburns anyway and just cut them off at the top of the ear/below my glasses (as opposed to halfway or third way like most people).
This is a really silly question, but I have been thinking about it a lot, so... Maybe I have too much time on my hands after the stroke ;)
Thanks!

I suggest that you let your side burns grow to the bottom of your earlobe, and trim the thickness to about 1/4".

I don't think it's a silly question at all. I've also struggled a lot with this very issue.
I prefer the fully-shaved-face look for myself, and dealing with where to end the hair and where to start shaving has been tricky for me. Ideally, I'd like to set that point at the "natural" location -- i.e., the location it would be if my face didn't grow hair. :)
Unfortunately, it's all but impossible for me to tell just exactly where that is. I also wear glasses, and shave to about a quarter of an inch below the frame, so my hair dips just below the top of my ears. I think it's shorter than my natural sideburn/hair separation point, but like I said, I'm not exactly sure where that would be.
I've also tried observing other longhaired people (mainly women) to try to imitate how theirs is, but it's too difficult for me to recreate. Plus, I've noticed that it really varies a lot between different people. Some have hair that extends way down in front of the ear -- like halfway or more -- while other people's hair ends close to the top of the ear.
Anyway, to get to the point of this long-winded post, here's my recommendation. If you decide to try to extend your hair farther down your face, it will at this point be 4 inches shorter than the rest of your hair and may be awkward to deal with. It might just be easier to leave it the way it is.
That's the situation I'm in -- if I start growing out more of my hair, it will be about 8.5 inches shorter than the rest (I've been growing my hair for 17 months). I've decided to just leave it like it is.
I don't think anyone except me has ever given any thought to my sideburns, and I'll bet no one's ever examined yours in detail either. So in the end, it's totally up to us and our personal preferences.
I hope some of this helps -- it's nice to know I'm not the only one who's thought about this. :)
