Like a lot of men my age (very late 40's), I had long hair as a young guy. For some strange reason (probably because I've done all of the boring stuff like advance in a career, had a family, etc.), I've decided I missed having long hair.
Because my hair is thinning now (I'm not bald though, hair is just thinner), I've decided on a pony tail.
Question: Do older men sporting longer hair get hassled about it? So far (about 9 months into this), only my mom has complained about it (yes, it never stops no matter how old you get!)
My hair is also about 10% gray.

No more so than normal, or maybe even less. Like you my biggest and
most vocal critic is my mother and I've had long hair for years and
years and years and....

I am 42 and began growing my hair out in October of 2000. I have been wearing it in a ponytail since last summer, and thus far almost no hasslying. My parents and brothers are the only ones who have had anything negative to say, and that only done passive-aggressively (pretty typical family stuff!). One of my students (I am a teacher) quoted his mom as saying that I must be a hippie who never grew up. I laughed and then asked the student when his mom had ever met me. He turned red and admitted that she had not. This all happened in front of a class, so it was a great way to demonstrate what stereotypes do.
Other than that, nothing.

I too am in my mid 40's and just started growing my hair out alittle over 2 years ago. I always wanted to have long hair but unfortunately due to a strict upbringing and a career in a semi-military organization it was never possible until I took an early retirement. I always promised myself that my last day of work there would be the last time I had short hair or another haircut!. So far I've stuck to it and I love it. My hair is just past my shoulders now.
I do have a thinning stop on the back/top of my head. I thought about a transplant but decided against based on advise mostly from this board. I use Toppik which covers it nicely.
Anyhow, as to negative feed back. I would say the comments I have recieved are about 2 to 1 bad to good. About a year after I started growing my hair, I had both ears pierced and usually wear hoop earrings-I thought this would invoke a some major reaction, but it amazes me that virtually no one even mentions the earrings!!, but long hair STILL on a guy still is not accepted as normal by the majority of people-- I can't figure it out.
As far as a ponytail goes, I notice that people accept this much more than when I wear my hair down (which I much prefer). I can't see taking all this time to grow out my hair so I can tie it all behind my head and pretend its not there!!

Hi There..
My name is Mike, at age 50, I too have grown my hair back.....I am a truck driver now, but the last 25+ years, was in retail management....
changed jobs...divorced...new career...LONG HAIR..........see my pic..
I am fortunate to have decided on a career that really does not mind hair that is long..most of the time..however..you get the occassional
negative comments..Just the other day, at a truck stop in Michigan, I was totally shocked, and happily surprised, when.. upon walking out of the truck stop, two young and beautiful women, whistled asI walked
past them..You must understand that, after a 26+ year marriage, that ended when my wife "discovered" that she no lomger wanted me in her life, and that she wanted her "new" boyfriend of a "surprising" 5 years--of which, as I traveled a lot, new nothing about until a little over a year ago..That I felt - upon being complemented by these two "chics", made me feel that I am still attractive...
There is life after a previous career and longterm marriage.

Maybe this is good news. I am pushing 70 and nobody hassels me! I am orphaned, widowed and retired and my girl friend likes it (or she's very polite). My relatives and friends (some very conservative) have all been very kind--a couple even complimented me. I thought the earring would surely raise commemt but after more than a year, has not--though sometimes there are "looks". Perhaps they are afraid to hassel a Viking!
