i set up and run cutting and printing presses manufacturing cardboard boxes. i tie it up as illustrated:
often i heep my hair inside my shirt so it isn't an issue.
as far as car maintenance... if i'm checking my transmission fluid where my car needs to be running i tie back my hair and throw a shirt on over it, otherwise my car isn't running when checking the oil. if you want extremely long hair you need to be aware of it more otherwise you can get badly hurt.
if you want total hair (head) coverage you can wear a hooded sweatshirt and keep the hood up.

j.s. is right. Hooded sweatshirts work well to protect your hair.
You can't be too careful when you have long hair as there are too
many dangers lurking out there just waiting just waiting to damage
your hair or you along with it.

Well, when I'm under a car, I tend to put my hair into a bun and then cover my scalp with a plastic grocery bag. That prevents crap from getting into my hair. And probably would keep it from getting hacked off by a cooling fan on an engine...

If your car is gas powered, try disconnecting the (+) wire on the coil if you realize that you forgot to shut it off when you check the oil. Works every time.
