growning it out, creative hairline

Hey everyone. Interesting board, interesting posts. I had a blast reading them at work last night (a guilty perk ;)).
Here's my question. I have a not so common hairline, being that it has the appearance to be receding at the temples. Judging by my dad's head of hear (same hairline), it's purely genetic, and doesn't seem to be a matter of hair loss. Currently, I'm a complete BALDY, shaved smooth. I wanna grow it out, to collar length, probably. What you guys say about the likely result? Goofy? Would it look good parted on the side? I know that a picture would help, think Phil Collins, but not that extreme. I should mention that my hair tends to get on the frizzy side, so that frizz eaze would likely be a ever present bullet in my armory. What's the time frame, in your opinion? A year, maybe?
On a semi-related note, can someone tell me what the long-term effects of using relaxers could be? I used them several times in my youth (used wrongly, I think), and am afraid I really pulled a number on me self.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

First of all, I doubt that the use of relaxers in your youth had any effect on your present situation, unless you had serious scalp burns from the caustic chemicals in the relaxer. Scalp burns can and do cause permanent damage to the root of the hair (papilla), but any damage done to the hair which does not directly affect the papilla will not have a lasting effect.
If you are looking to have your entire head of hair to collar length from a shaved bald head, you should expect to grow your hair for approximately two years.
Curious... How long have you been shaving bald, and why do you want to have long hair now? It's completely your choice, but I couldn't be bothered to deal with all the friz if I was in your situation! Does friz eaze work well? I wouldn't go the relaxer route again, either, if I were you. Relaxers work somewhat well for ethnic hair, yet they tend to dry out, and damage caucasion hair. Also, most people who relax their hair, also have it styled as well, to help the hair have some type of style, instead of just laying limp.
