I'm cutting my hair Friday!

Now don't freak out, I have had this planned for quite some time now. Let me tell you the story, I had an undercut w/the sides shaved down to a #1. The hair on top (the only long hair) was really really damaged (I highlighted, permed, and used that sun in stuff on my naturally very dry hair, which I'm guessing is what totally fried it) I even asked a few salon people but they all said they really couldn't do anything about it. It is so horrible, after about fifteen minutes of getting out of the shower If i don't put gel in it, it will get all frizy and completely tangled up into a big ball. I used many conditioners and conditioning treatments but nothing helped. Finally I gave up (this was this past October), at this point I also got sick of the undercut and decided I wanted full long hair. So since October I have been growing the sides out, but I didn't and haven't cut the hair on top b/c I didn't want to look like a total short haired guy. So the sides have been growing and although a bit dry the hair doesn't look bad like the hair on top. Anyways, this Friday I am finally cutting the hair on top to even it all out (NO MORE GEL IN MY HAIR, YES!!) but I'm so scared that the new hair that has been growing under that damaged hair will for some reason be the same. Anyways, I'm pretty excited about this and hope the hair will not be in bad shape. Just wanted to share, thanks for reading and wish me luck (I know I'm paranoid)

OK. Your headline had me prepared for a major trauma, but I see your point.
The hair that was created after you damaged your hair should be fine. Hair is created just beneath the skin level in the follicle. It can be affected by drugs, diet, etc., but that's pretty rare.
Just don't abuse your new hair, take good care of it, and it will be fine.
You've learned your lesson, I take it.
