Frequent Shampooing Woes

I am growing my hair out, and it is going well. However, in the past I have failed because of the frequency that I must wash my hair. It has so much "wave" that washing is sometimes the only way to get it presentable in the morning. Then I work out at the gym, making it beyond grimey with sweat, so I have to wash it again.
I use a high-quality conditioner and skimp on the shampoo. Any other tips? I don't want it to just dry out the longer it gets.
Thanks.

my dear joe--
You need to fine a hairstylist who understands exactly what you want and ask him/her to cut your hair as little as possible so it will grow out, but in the mean time to cut it into a style that you can wear when you get out of the shower with minimal fussing.
The you need to ask your hairstyulist, how to manage with a little more fussing. Perhaps you tie a scarf around your head so you can go out in public, or perhaps you need to experiment with Rollers. In time you will find a way to have big hair and happiness.

I know what you're saying - your hair in the morning looks like you slept in it, and well, you did. Also, you said it gets grimy later from sweating. In both cases, you can just use water on it to help you neaten it up. Sweat and the oil in your hair are both water-soluble, and they will just wash away. In time you'll learn how much water to use to wash the grime away without also washing away too much of the oil, because doing that is what makes your hair dry. It's a balancing act, not so easy as just soaking your hair to the max in something, but once you learn it, you'll feel very much in control.

This may sound silly but consider buying a boar-bristle hair brush and using it after your work-outs. Don't shampoo your hair, just rinse it and brush it. Distribute the oils.
A single shampoo a day is plenty, two could be damaging to the hair if the shampoo and water aren't just right.
