Well as i posted about my hair before and got a responce for a layer cutt to get rid of this shaggy, mullet like hair but still have it long so i can get long hair. Im scared that they are going to take off to much or somthing. What exactly do they do when cutting. I havent had a hair cutt for 8 months and last time i did i said i never was again becasue i ended up with not even a inch of hair but i guess i had it comming becasue i said get it short as can be with still having some hair. So my real question i guess is what do the stylist or barber or whatever actualy do when cuting it in layers and getting rid of this semi mullet thing going on. Damn this sucks, all i asked for is long hair with out ever having to get it cutt again. Also would this be the only time i would have to get this done or will i have to keep getting it done till its long enough. Man im so confused, thank god for this board. Thanks in advance. Joe

i still say, let it be shaggy and "mullet like" and eventually after it all grows out for a while it will improve, even if it seems like it takes a while.
that probably did not help, but no worries. :) if you ignore it, everything will be alright.
(unless of course you have to have it looking "good" for some reason)
Personally I think your hair looks great

It doesn't resemble a mullet to me.
For eight months since getting pretty much a butch, I think you're doing a fine job. But if you really think you need a cut, just suggest a trim in the back, and be firm about it.
If you know someone who wears long hair, ask them where they go for a trim. If not, you might consider a barbershop instead of a hair stylist, because hair stylists do tend to do "layer cuts", which I don't like, because it takes too much off the top and sides.
If all else fails and you feel really desperate, you might have a friend or yourself just take a little off the back, but again, I don't really think you need it.
How old are you, and are you getting any grief from anyone on wearing your hair longer?

im 15 years old, People talk alot of crap about my hair at school. I kinda like it. I like to be different then other kids, they all piss me off being the same. Its getting old. Everyone wearing the same shoes, pants, shirts, and hats. No one really wants to be original that is my age. I also listen to alot of clasic rock Like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath and stuff along those lines, no rap like everyone else at my school. Im planning on growing my hair to the middle of my back. I was going to just get it cutt off in the back because i thought that it would be all uneven when its longer or somthing like that.

: Joe, why cut anything? You look great. Just from looking at the picture, you have the same look I have except I have my hair longer in the back. Don't be concerned with other peoples comments, let alone your peers. Grow it the way YOU want it. And if you decide to get a trim to get rid of split ends, get a trim. But don't get it layered. Keep it growing!!!! You won't get it to mid back length if you keep on cutting it.

I'm glad to hear there are some young people out there who try to be individuals. Let us know if you choose to keep your hair as is. You would be lucky if you have parents who don't harass you.
By the way, I know all about how kids like to all wear the same clipped haircuts these days, but I was intrigued by your comment about the same "shoes, pants, shirts, and hats". What is the style of these that you see repeated so often in your area?

Yeah my principal at my school is against long hair. Several guys in my year have tried growing their hair long only to have been told to get it cut. I've been lucky in managing to avoid my principal so far, so fingers crossed.

You guys go to public or private school? There's a few guys with long hair and/or growing it out (that would be me) in my school (public) and it is not a problem. I don't know if the Principal likes it or not but he can't tell people to cut it since long hair IS allowed. So is it actually a rule to have short hair at your school or just the principal wanting people to get haircuts?

I go to private school. As far as I know there is no rule against long hair, but the principal has threatened to suspend people in the past if they didnt get it cut (he also suspended a guy for shaving his head bald). He's very mainstream conscious, so if long hair was mainstream now he'd be all for long hair. :(

In my school many people tried to grow their hair long but the principal made them get it cut. I've been lucky in not running into him so far though *fingers crossed*

Well since my parents know how much growing my hair means to me I'm hoping they'd stick up for me if he does notice and tells me to get it cut.

Ok, there are 4 basic types of haircuts (so they tell us in hair school).
The Zero Degree (or blunt cut), where they comb all the hair straight down and cut it off in a straight line paralell with the floor. This is probably the look you're going for.
The 45 degree, where they first do a Zero Degree, then hold the hair out and cut it at a 45 degree angle from the bottom. Popular with the ladies.
The 90 degree, where each hair is held at a 90 degree angle from the scalp and cut. Good if you want lots of layers. LOL's (Little Old Ladies) get 'em cut around 3" long then perm 'em, set 'em in rollers, brush 'em out, and get those funny "space helmet" hairdos. Wish I had a nickel for every one of those boogers I've done in school. This is what you probably don't want if you're trying to grow your hair.
The 180 degree, which is pretty much the opposite of the Zero. They cut a section of hair on the top of your head to, say 3" or 5" or whatever, then pull the rest of the hair up alongside it, and cut it to the same length. You could get the same effect if you hung upside down, combed all your hair down, and had someone weed-whack your hair. When you comb it out, it looks pretty ok (I like it, anyway) but again, probably not what you're looking for. It'll have short hair on top and long hair at the bottom with lots of layers in between. Seen lots of rock stars with 'em in years past.
In practice, most haircuts are combinations of these four basics. But for your purposes, you should probably tell your barber/stylist to cut it 2" or 4" (or whatever) below your neckline, straight across, 'cause you want a Zero degree cut. You might want to have him trim along the perimeter a bit so the edges don't look uneven . . . or not.
If you've got lots of layers now and not much length in the back and you want to have the rough edges trimmed, tell him/her to "just trim, and don't cut more than 1/2" off of anything!" Might help to walk into the shop wearing lots of leather and gang-related stuff. Glare menacingly when you say "No more than half an inch!" and you should be ok.
Hope this helps . . .

Well im going to leave my hair do what ever it wants to do,no cutts, no snip here or there, nothing. Well i dont know what i will do when its past my goal. And the comment about everyone being the same, Well there are groups, you got your so called (Gangstas) that wear all fubu and the latest michal jordan shoes. Then you got your Skateboarders/punk rockers, they wear all the INDEPENDENT shirts and tight black winter hats (even in the summer)with short green or red colered spiked hair with Vans shoes. Then there is the Wannabe rockers that listen to crappy rock music like Slipknot and Disturbed that mostly look like skateboarder/punk rockers but they keep short hair but not spiked and no color and wear mostly slipknot or whatever new rock band logo shirts. Finally you got your PREPS, i hate them the most. They are more stuck up then everyone else. That wear a brand new shirt and pair of pants a day, bring loads of money and wave it around to show everyone how rich they are. And have very pretty boy looking hair cutts. Oh yeah and there are the everyday common jocks, they never really change.

Since you apparently want long hair, don't get it cut until the sides are as long as the back is now. That appears to be approximately 6-8 months away. You can then get the back cut to match the sides, and it will be virtually all one length, except for the bangs. You can have them trimmed very slightly if you want, to give the hair a decent shape, if that's what you are looking for. Do not get a layered haircut. You will not be happy with it! Once you get the sides to the length you have in back, and all is cut one length, you just let your hair grow to the point that you like, and get a trim every couple months to keep your hair the length you want.
You are lucky to have decent hair to grow out. It doesn't appear that you have to deal with much of the awkward phase that many discuss on this board.

Relax! Every hair stylist will be happy to meet with you for a consultation before your appointment. They'll be happy to help you say what you mean. Also, do what I used to do. Any time you come across a magazine or newspaper photo, cut it out and take it with you.
I did this for years, until I decided to let my hair grow all one length.

:Joe, what state do you live in? Texas? It sounds like your principal is stereotyping you. Tell him your not going to cut your hair and look like the Enron Executives, Timothy McVeigh, or Adolph Hitler. If there is nothing in the school dress code that specifically states limits on a guys hair length, don't cut it. Your principal's thinking is outdated!!!

:Your right next door to me!!! I live in central Pennsylvania. I haven't heard any reports of young fellows having trouble with teachers/principals in school with long hair in Ohio. But, I have heard of these reports in Texas (That's why I assumed you lived in Texas). Keep the hair growing and ignore this principal of yours. He has no right to force you to get a haircut whether long hair is "in" or not. You have a right as a US citizen to FREEDOMLY EXPRESS yourself. Don't let him take that guaranteed right away from you. Just do me and all of us long haired guys a favor; show this principal and your teachers that there are long haired guys (just like yourself and I) who care to get an education and are law abiding citizens of this great country of ours. Stay clear of drugs, alcohol. It sounds like I'm preaching to you, but I'm sick and tired of hearing that long haired guys are gay, druggies, and are lazy, etc. That's not the case with me. I've went to college, have a Professional Engineering license, and preform my work more professionally than the short haired co-workers in my office do. Good luck!!!
