Hey everybody, As you may know from previous posts my boss is quite the prick, and blackmailed me into cutting my hair. That was about a year and a half ago, and I have been regrowing ever since. No trims and it is down past my shoulders a little bit. Since I have been there he has been very rude, harrassing, and discrimintatory to me and my co-workers. There are three of us, and him. I work in Digital Imageing. We have made a list and went to his supervisor and are fileing a comlaint with a list of things we want changed. I am hopefull but not optimistic that things will change. What really got me was what my boss's supervisor said to me. When I told him about what my boss had done in regards to my hair, he says to me that I deceved them. I asked how I could have decieved anyone. I was told that because I cut my hair and am regrowing it that I didn't represent my self truthfully to the company. Mind you A month and a half after I start working there my boss chases me to my car after work at 5 on a friday night and says I have to cut it short or he will fire me on monday. No one to speak to, and find out the truth, or go above him to uppermanagement, considering its friday after work. No one else in managment knows, they all think I did it because I work on a military base, and was trying to be respectfull. I said no way did I decieve anyone, I came to the job interview with my hair in plain sight, and you chose to hire me. If you didn't like it then why didn't you say something then, or not hire me? It's not like I came with it hidden in my hat, or down my shirt or put up somehow, and then after I start there just let it down and say, by the way I have long hair. I also pointed out that regardless of where I am working, I am a civilian employee and will do my hair any way I please, considering that there is absolutly nothing in the employee hand book. I tried my best to make my point, but I wanted to make it very clear. Just amazes me, the nerve saying that I decieved them. Anyway the truth is that the uppermanagement didn't see a major problem with it, just wanted to make sure I kept it up during certain occasions, and my boss takes this as a way to impress managment, and well blackmailed me into cutting it. I have learned a lot and I was only 21 at the time. I wish I hadn't been so nieve, but it was the first really good job, and with school loans, car payment you make so mistakes. I had never had any one or previous empoyers make an issue about the hair. I have worked my ass of out there, and was nominated for empoyee of the quarter, and have had severel positve comments from customers placed in my file. Hopefully this will work to my advantage. However I am sure there will be retribution for this. Either way I am growing back the hair. I will try to keep everyone updated on what happens.

Maybe you should take a moment and think about what he said, instead of being so critical. No one like a radical, but we all want a change.Who give's a Shi% if he dosent say REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT!

I don't need to think about what he said, I voted for Nader(the Green Party). You know just as well as I do that there are many people who whine about this issue and then aren't even registered to vote, which is probably his case. James just wants to make himself seem important.
HE needs to think about what he said so he can make a statement that makes sense.

First of all, Good luck: be true to yourself!
Secondly. We have here via the hyperboard a vast wealth of talent and interest from all over the world. There are also the personals. There ought to be a site where jobs are offered by those who decline to dictate unimportant things and just want somebody who can do the work well. Not necessarily a 'work offered to longhairs' site, but a 'non-discriminatory work site'.
I have been very lucky in that apart from my first job I have not had to conform to any dress code (my first job was suit and tie, but I got another job after 5 months). I now work with a lot of people. All of them are great at their work and are able to be themselves. There must be lots of us who put quality of work before trivialities!
PS Just a thought. What would be the reaction if we were somebody's boss, and employed somebody with short hair, then told them they had to grow it?

Hi, Since my self and others that work with me have gone to the bosses boss things have changed a little.
At first my boss looked like he was going to wet his pants after I was in speaking to his boss for about two hours. Then one of my co workers went in.
The next day he was really snippy and rude, but then went and started to be super freindly and polite. He accted like every thing was ok. I went to speak with his boss again that day, at his request. He tried to convince me that because I am a good worker, and my boss hasn't said anything negative about me to him, that I should let it go, and not go along with my co workers.
He basically said that he doesn't believe us and that my boss is going to be protected, and that there won't be any changes. Despite the fact that the turn over has been huge and many people have complained, even other supervisors. He keeps talking about dolars and sense and that he doesn't want turnover because it is expensive yada yada yada. So why not get rid of the problem!
So today my boss didn't say but a single sentence to me, usually he talks my ear off about something, usually other co workers in a derogitory way. He told me I have to come in at the same time as my co workers, I was coming in early, and going early, but he approved it back last year. I didn't say anything, but I relize he will probably try to make my life and my co workers lives hell.
Any suggestions from a legal and preactical side? We have started to act amish, we kinda shun him. We work like he isn't there and don't respond or speak to him unless we have to. We sit there and work with our headphones on, and I hope that he feels isolated. Every day when I leave I want to key his car, or actually dent it or something, but I know that there is probably some sort of camera someplace watching since it is a military base.

Seems to me that if you have been working different hours for several months that you can show that it has been accepted as being OK to work those different hours.
Good luck, and don't let them push you around. How much support do you have from your co-workers?
