Getting 25 years of long hair whacked.

Hiya peeps.
I'm facing a REAL dilema here.
I had long hair for most all my adult life and considering a major
career change. I have been told that I should cut my hair to get the job.
I've had waist length hair for the last 15 years and really can't imagine myself without it. BUT I NEED THE MONEY ....
I've been looking at some pictures of haircuts that are considered "long" but they all kinda make me sick to my stomach.
I could use some feedback. Thanx for your time, Wes.

Some time back there was a guy with long hair who wore a wig that made him look mainstream enough for his employer. He even posted pictures with and without the wig and it looked like it worked. I think you should consider that before cutting!

If you plan to have long hair after getting the job, then by no means cut it off for the interview. You are well past the iffy stage of in-between length hair. I've found the employers are more accepting of really long hair than marginally long hair. I suppose the difference is that with something like waist-length hair you have obviously made a conscious decision to have that style. A shorter style would look more like you just neglected a shorter cut.

: I cut my hair a couple of years ago for work. It paid off financially. I am certain I would have lost one very lucrative opportunity if I had had long hair when it came along. I have made a conscious decision to leave it short for two and one-half more years and then that's it. No more haircuts forever. As unpleasant as losing my long hair has been, I've been able to deal with it by recognizing that its only temporary. So if you can establish in your own mind an "exit" date for when you will grow it again, you might be able to endure.

What about an Ashton Kutcher haircut? Or Tom Cruise from "Vanilla Sky"? I know you said that some of the haircuts you saw still made you feel sick, but these are just a couple of suggestions.
Keep us updated.

You gotta be you, but you gotta eat too.
Just be DAMN sure that its ABSOLUTELY necessary before you whack your mane. I would talk to your potential employer. Make sure you HAVE the job IN HAND, and ONLY if you cut your hair. Do you feel me, homie?

Remain independent of any source of income that will deprive you of your freedom and personal liberties.
It is not what he has, nor even what he does, which directly expresses the worth of a man, but what he is. I'll take integrity over money any day!
Nuff said!
Not worth it.

What exactly is this job that "requires" you to have short hair?
I'm curious because I (and at least one other friend) have "long" hair in a professional workplace. You do *not* want to work for anyone that has those kind of prejudices, because they will ultimately manifest in dozens of other ways down the road. Sales is a bit of a different animal though, I will admit.

I'm sure you can find another job that's similar to the one you're looking at, BUT, without cutting. Either that, or consider putting it into either a bun or something to make it look like you have shorter hair while working.

A friend of mine just called me for an opinion. He is turning thirty soon, has a new job in a legal office which he loves, and a girlfriend of almost a year that he plans on asking to marry this summer.
Out of the total blue, he said he thinks it is time to cut it short. He admits he is very nervous. I advised him to talk to the girlfriend, wait two weeks, and start looking at pictures of what he wants to do with his hair.
I have never seen him with short hair (over ten years), He has gorgeous blonde hair almost to his waist.
I NEVER thought he would cut his hair (I have a feeling he is going to go through with it). He said he is the happiest he has ever been, and he feels his hair is "his past" and is now in the way. I hope he doesn't regret it.
I just thought it was ironic that he has the job and stuff and came to this conclusion while others have the opposite situation,

If you actually feel sick at the thought of cutting it, you can't do it. If the job turns out not to be what you want, or even if you just have a bad day at work, you will feel all the worse because you'll be thinking "I cut my hair for this!"
