Erik, as a professional men's hairstylist, I have never understood the concept of a single product having two ingredients apparently opposed to each other: a shampoo (supposed to clean the hair of residues) and a conditioner (supposed to remain on the hair to "condition"). It remains a puzzle to me. But it does explain why it's not as good as using a shampoo and conditioner separate.

Since you are a pro stylist and post here regularly hope you dont mind advising. I am as confused as some of the others about how often to shampoo, condition, rinse only, what to use, etc
I have made it further in my growth than ever before and used to shampoo every day, no conditioner when it was short. I have normal to just a bit oily hair and work indoors. Any advise on what to use and how often will be greatly appreciated. I dont want to strip out the oils daily if they are needed but I feel a bit "greasy" when I dont shampoo every day. Thanks for any help.

If you analyze what you have just told me, the answers/advice you seek is right there--pretty much using common sense.
"I...used to shampoo every day, no conditioner when it was short. I have normal to just a bit oily hair...I dont want to strip out the oils daily if they are needed but I feel a bit 'greasy' when I dont shampoo every day."
Because your hair is a bit oily, there was no need to condition artificially when your hair was short...your own oils coated the short hair even when shampooed daily.
Now you still feel a bit greasy when you don't shampoo daily. That means you are still producing enough natural oils to lubricate (condition) your hair even if you shampoo daily. So shampoo daily. As for a commercial conditioner, you certainly do NOT need one.
Which shampoo do I recommend? My men's grooming center uses/retails 100% American Crew products. (I can hear the groans and "boo!"s from some of the guys now...) Actually, the reason for that is "it works for me and my clients". That should be the reason for using whatever you (and whoever else is reading this) use: "it works for you". And I realize that means products other than American Crew. That's OK...as long as they are, in my mind, "professional" products. Using Pert as an example: haircare professionals like myself could save thousands of dollars in supplies by using Pert in our establishments rather than American Crew, right? Why don't we? Quality (based upon ingredients) products produce quality results. There is a difference.

I have used AT LEAST 10 shampoos and 10 conditioners, ranging from the cheapos to the overpriced (Physique)
If I plan to condition my hair, the 2in1s are the way to go, at least for me. They do just what they say: wash and condition. The hair is clean and fairly easy to comb. best ive used: Pantene moisturizing 2in1 (stronger), L'Oreal kids 2in1 (weaker). The conditioner component seems to be far superior than the conditioner-onlys.
I don't care for products that are conditioners only (rinse-outs, I don't know much about leave-ins). They all leave my hair coated in synthetic oil. Sure, its easier to comb (when wet) but it also darkens the hair, and only looks good for part of the day, then its like the synthetic crap breaks down. They also make my hair get real oily real fast (gross). By late afternoon Ive got a frizzy, dark, oily mess with that garbage.
I keep a few shampoos-only of different "potencies" around.
Since I use wax (the least oily one I can fine, Beezwax, its quite nice) in my hair, I need a potent shampoo to clear out the old wax, prevent buildup. If I use a weak shampoo or a crappy conditioner-only, it won't clear it out as well and the hair will be less soft and more oily. Minimal at first, but it gets worse each time.
Pantene Purity (clarifying) and Physique clarify are great if you use any gunk in your hair (conditoner, styling). (I can get away with Pantene 2in1, for awhile, so if you just use gel/hairspray/leave in conditioner, you probably can, but the stronger stuff might be better). I have weak hair, so the clarifiers dry it out.
Then I use the bizzarre product known as "baby shampoo" You know, the Yellow-orange Johnson n Johnson (or generic) stuff thats dirt cheap. It doesn't even contain soap! I bought it hoping for a weak-ass shampoo for my naturally dry, frizzy hair.
Its weaker than I anticipated. This stuff will not strip your hair at all. In fact, it isnt even that effective at removing oil, either. Won't do the job if your hair is oily (2-3 days for me), ineffective on wax, and I don't know about gels/sprays (don't use em)
Easily the weakest (shampoo)thing I've used. I use it as a conditioner (and a damn good one, too), to undo the dryout from clarifiers. It doesn't break down during the day or anything, as it doesn't appear to put anything in your hair to begin with. Has kind of a slight blonding effect, though, for me at least (my hair is light brown), so I guess it must put SOMETHING in. There is no shampoo or conditioner or hair-anything like this. Its seems to be in a class of its own, I don't understand it, but its good stuff.
So, if you don't put anything in your hair or get anything in your hair (chlorine) use something on the weak side like L'Oreal kids 2in1 (yummy flavors), that'll take out the oil without overdryin, and the conditioner component is quality, like pantene's 2in1. If your hair is hardcore dry, even when you havent washed in awhile, try the baby shampoo (if you dont use styling gunk)
The more you gunk your hair, or if its oily, or if you have a job where it gets gunked, use something stronger. Most of the shampoos I've tried are kind of in the middle (Aussie, Finesse, Suave) Pantene 2in1 is as strong as these for cleaning, and the conditioner component seems far superior (as with L'Oreal kids) than the conditioner-onlys. Less oily, feels clean, doesn't have a blatant breakdown effect.
Synthetic oil rinse-out conditioner-onlys - nasty, oily.
2in1s - good. not too dry not too oily.
Clarifiers - better,
if your hair is greasy/styling product buildup.
if frizzy/weak/dry hair, Overdrying likely occurs, If anybody knows of a conditioner-only that doesn't suck, i.e. doesn't have the side effects I described, please reply. slacker
Remedy - the paradoxical Baby Shampoo, 36-48 hours, or
Rinse-out ones, that is, I dont care about leave-ins.
