split ends, help, etc.

Hi...I've been growing my hair out since approximately last October. My bangs, when stretched, reach just past the end of my nose. I have noticed that along the sides of my head I have many, many split ends. Sometimes they look really obvious, and sometimes they don't. There are far too many to pick out and trim. It would take forever. I used to have pretty short hair-- about 2 inches in the front, anyway. I dyed it all the time and didn't take very good care of it. Will these split ends look bad forever? I've been really excited about growing my hair out...it finally has grown long enough to where it hangs down and moves on its own, and I'm really liking it. I'm just really, really nervous that I'm gonna have to cut it short and start over.

Don't worry about split-ends, they will work theirselves out or if you can trust your hairstylist, mother, aunt, uncle or whoever else may cut hair just have them trim the ends for you. IF YOU CAN TRUST THEM! But I suggest just leaving them alone. Just keep reading around this board and find out ways to take good care of your hair from here on out and everything will level out. Here is a good site to go to for long hair care: http://www.choisser.com/longhair/

Thanks, I feel a lot better now. I have had a trim once...I was really nervous cause I didn't know if I could trust her. However, once I explained that I was growing my hair out, she seemed almost overly careful to just baaaarely cut of the ends...needless to say, I was very relieved, and of course, grateful. It's good to know that I don't need to worry so much about the present split ends I have. Within the past few months I have been trying to take really good care of my hair...I'm very gentle with it. Anyway, thanks for the response.

My hair gets tangled more easily if there's split ends. I usually sit down for a few minutes a couple of times a month to trim each one out. You don't have to get them all out in one session, you don't even have to get them all out. I think some men and women worry about their hair (and not just hair) too much. I used to do this, mostly because I thought it took more effort than it actually does. I just try to be gentle, and not try to make my hair what it's not, and that seems to work for me.
That's good advice.

Well said. I agree totally.

It won't take forever to go through them all, try it sometime when you have an hour or two to sit and relax.
