Long Hair on Asian Men

What is your opinion of Asian men having long hair? Does it work? Are there any special considerations for an Asian guy with short hair who's thinking about growing his hair out, since Asian hair is slightly different from average hair?
Thanks.

For thousands of years, Chinese men wore their hair in queues (long braided hair).
The majority of these queues reached waist-length, some were a bit shorter, and a few were a bit longer.
In the 1870's, anti-Chinese laws such as "The Queue Ordinance" made wearing long hair by Chinese a crime.
I am happy that these laws have long been nullified, so that men of all ethnic backgrounds may wear their hair as long as nature allows.

Jesus! I never knew that. You never learn any of that in high school, not at the ones I went to, anyway. It should be mandatory in history classes. Oh, but wait, that wouldn't be patriotic!
Also, I wonder if that's how the short hair at work policy got started, as a way to more subtly discriminate against Asians, Native Americans, etc.

Short hair at work, if it is required, is about control--controlling everyone seen as an underling or inferior. Minorities with different hair traditions would, of course, but the first to go, or be controlled. The white anglo group has been "under control" for centuries, or rather, in control--of controlling others.

In San Francisco, a series of discriminatory local laws was passed in the early 1870s. The Cubic Air Ordinance regulated the size of living and working quarters. The Sidewalk Ordinance forbade the use of poles, such as Chinese traditionally used, to carry bundles. The Queue Ordinance required Chinese in jail to cut their queues (their long braided hair), even though they would not be able to return to China without them. A series of laundry ordinances required Chinese American laundries to pay higher taxes than other laundries, and regulated the types of buildings in which laundry businesses could be housed.
Methinks in the furture, the Old West should be retitled the Bigoted West.

I'm an Asian man with shoulder length hair ;) Been growing my hair out since May last year and just got my first trim last Wednesday... There are considerations... Asians have A LOT more hair (at least I do) and than Caucasians and I know my hair grow out a tad faster than average.
I suggest you look at your "Asian hair is slightly different from average hair" again... What exactly do you mean by "average" hair?
Love,
Kev

I'm glad you bring this up. It's as if whites' hair is the norm, anything else is "some weird not normal kind of 'other'." White people (which I am) dominate the media, so EVERYONE gets the impression that white=good, anything else=bad. It's not this overt, it happens in more subtle ways spread across the board. Melvin, I hope you don't think I'm putting you down, I am putting down U.S. media and the whites who are in denial about the problem. Okay, I'll shut up now, I hope it doesn't seem like I'm trying to jump in and take over your conversation. I'm mainly just trying to get other whites to get the picture.

Good point, Kev & T. Melvin, you gotta realise that Asians constitute the majority of the world's population, so if at all, it is they who go towards swinging the average.

For a variety of reasons, there are less pictures of non-white longhairs on the Internet, and for cultural reasons, less Asian and European men who grow their hair long, compared to North Americans and this also contrubutes to skewed impressions.

Asian guys have very beautiful hair: heavy, thick and silk. We have to admit that us White people, we often(there are some exceptions fortunately) have hair like rat tails compared to hair of the most part of other people in the world.
For my part I love the classical cut that we very often see on guys in China or Vietnam: short hair back and on the sides but longer on the top and in front with sometimes a very long fringe to the right side. When the fringe falls heavily on their eyes or on their face, or from the top to below their left ear, it is just an heaven sight.

I wouldn't run down Caucasian hair. It's generally very fine texture is lovely to the feel and hangs, bounces amd blows in sensuous ways.

the reason most american's hair is not nearly as nice: we wash it too much. daily washing ends up drying and damaging the hair. drying it with a blowdryer is even worse. people compare my hair to asian hair all the time, it's long and perfectly straight and like silk. And I'm scotch/irish/english... i just don't wash it every day. that's it.

I'm Asian, live in Malaysia and I've included a scanned picture of a longhaired friend of mine taken about 27 years ago. I won't reveal his name but he's ethnically Malay and had really beautiful long hair -- way back then, though he cut it for a job long time ago.
I've been an observer/admirer of long hair for many years now and I basically feel that anyone -- male or female -- of any race can have beautiful long hair, provided it's either straight or lightly wavy.
The term "Asians" comprises a wide range races, thnic groups and nationalities stretching from part of Turkey to the easternmost tip of Siberia, and from the northernmost tip of Asian Russia to Australia and New Zealand (which are considered part of Asia now).
In Malaysia and Singapore, we mainly have Malays, Chinese and Indians (mainly from central and south India) and their hair differs in thickness and degree of straightness and curliness.
The Chinese generally have thick hair, mainly straight hair though some Chinese have slightly wavy and even less have curly hair.
The Malays generally have perfectly straight hair (like my friend) and slightly wavy hair, and more Malays have curly hair than the Chinese. More Malays also have finer hair than the Chinese.
Indian hair tends to vary from thick to fine and its texture varies from slightly wavy to curly.
While, it ultimately depends on each individual's biological capabilities, especially women (and some men) from all three races can potentially grow their hair past their buttocks.
In comparison, Caucasian hair generally tends to be very fine and thus hangs in a different way from Asian hair and it can either perfectly straight, slightly wavy or even curly but irrespective of that, Caucasian hair can be just as beautiful in its own way as Asian or other races' hair.

According to the Kodansha Encyclopdia of Japan, page 82 before the 7th century, men and women wore their hair long in loops over the ears or topknots, just as nature intended it to be.
In 1871, a law was passed encourging all males to cut off their long hair and topknots, so they would look more western.
Japanese exchange students I have talked to, starting in the early 1960's some Japanese men started wearing their hair long. It appears that guys wear short hair until they graduate from high school, then grow it out shoulder-length.
Like the United States, only a few guys grow it to waist-length and fewer still wear it longer.
