There's a guy named Monie who hasn't posted to the board for awhile who sells mini-scrunchies called "Monie's Little Ponies" on Ebay.
Another way to go, since many hair-ties are so plain, is to spice em up with a hair cuff or similar hair accessories.
Here are some links:
Tailcuff.com These are popular.
Hair Glove Interesting. Not my cup of tea, but maybe yours.
Copper Bracelets.com The sterling hair cuffs are really better in my opinion. I haven't bought any of his other stuff.
Wildlife Hair Jewelry I think these guys give money to help endangered species. Check it out.
Monies Ponies I found the ebay link (I have no idea if its still good cuz I'm too lazy to test it. :)
Hope there's some useful stuff here. (The lazy thing is true, I haven't tested any of these links.)

This link works, but last time I checked, nothing was listed on her site. Apparently is busy doing stuff for her mother.

Like "golf clubs", "hair bands" has two meanings - I assume you mean the kind of hair band that wraps around your head rather than gets into it. :-)
Walgreen's and places like that sell terry cloth elastic bands that are the right size to fit your head. You can also buy ordinary bandannas in colors and fold them into a band to tie around your head. If you do that, fold them on the diagonal (so you will be tying opposite corners) into a strip about an inch wide.
If you want something fancier, go to fairs and such where artisans are. Truthfully, there's not a big market for hair bands, or we'd see them in stores. A recent walk down Haight Street revealed hundreds of items to smoke your dope in, but almost nothing to tie down long hair. I suppose to a hippie, any colorful cloth will do. :-)
On the other hand, if it's the other kind of hair bands that interests you, Amoeba Music on Haight, pictured above, is definitely the place. (wink)

At first I wasn't sure if you meant Hair Bands as in bands to wear around your head, or Hair Bands as in Rock, Country, etc. bands with long hair!
