Supplements--Saw Palmetto & Biotin
Posted by FITMUS on July 25, 2002 at 16:15:29: Previous Next
A few years ago when I had long hair, I was informed of "Saw Palmetto" as a supplement to prevent baldness. I heard (and this is a little technical) that the Saw Palmetto blocks DHT from binding with hair recptors, thereby preventing baldness.
I was also told that Biotin would increase hair growth speed.
Can anyone confirm the truth, if not stated already, behind Saw Palmetto (preventing baldness) and Biotin (speeding hair growth)?
Thanks.

Click here for information on Biotin. I believe Biotin has to do with hair strength more than anything, but I have read here that vitamin C stimulates hair growth. Read the bottom of the page for this and more vitamin info concerning hair. In fact, read this whole site, it has a lot of good info on hair health. I can't find a lot to do with Saw Palmetto concerning hair, but it is widely associated with male prostate reproductivity health. Hope this helps.

I read that. You're right, it seems like biotin is just for strength. Thanks for the response.

Yes, that's the theory. Oddly, while saw palmetto might prevent baldness due to DHT it will also
prevent hair from growing in the ears and other places it shouldn't!
Saw Palmetto--Interesting...

Geez, that's interesting too hear. I'm going to have to research that a bit because that's a new one on me. I hope that's not the case (about "bad" hair prevention)! If I find anything, I'll post it.

First off, saw palmetto will not prevent baldness. Its mode of action is uncertain. One of its modes of action MAY be interfering with the production or the effectiveness of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) suspected by many to be one of the causes of baldness. It is primarily used to treat benign prostate hyperplasia (the prostate enlargement that affects many men over the age of 50).
Minoxidil is a much better baldness preventer, in my experience. I've had thinning hair since my early 30's, and I have been using minoxidil for 15 years or so. I think it really slowed down the thinning process quite a lot. I still have pretty good 'coverage' for my long hair (now past shoulders!!!).
