My hair is a TOTAL MESS

My hair is as described. What I mean by this is that after 20 minutes or so of washing and combing, it is tangled in spots. The hairs are rough and worse than straw-like.
I was using a shampoo and conditioner in one. I switched to rinse out conditioner, and although it is better, I still have so many tangles I am afraid I am going to go completely bald just trying to comb my hair, because the wide-tooth comb is caught so often.
If I let it go a few days without washing, the same result.
HELP! What can I do to make my hair NOT tangle up so much?

Some conditioners can actually be WORSE than shampoos
especially if you already have thick hair.
You might probably be better off with a 'detangler.' Just
look for products that emphasize DETANGLE as opposed to
cleaning & conditioning.
Also, skip the comb and get one of those brushes with plastic 'bristles' that have gaps of about half an inch apart or
more.
Try something else..

What kind of shampoo/conditioner are you using? What works for one person might not work for another. Also, how are you using them? The process makes almost as big of difference as the product, at times. Describe EXACTLY how you do it. There are a number of things that can cause what you are experiencing, and often there is not one best solution.

Another possibility is to try a leave-in conditioner.

Scott, pay no attention to the label of Redken's "Headstrong light tamer" proclaiming it to be a conditioner for fine hair. It is the best detangler for long thick hair I have ever used on/recommended to my clientele (mine is a internationally-reputed longhair-friendly men's grooming resource center).

Thanks for the suggestions.
I have been using Aussie shampoo and conditioner after just using shampoo.
My hair is fine ( I wish it was thick and full).
I'll try the de-tangler and other suggestions.
