College Interviews

This year will be my senior year and going to the college of my choice (whatever that may be) is very important to me. My bangs are just past my lips but I've just started growing out the rest of my hair which means all next year I'll be in that slovenly awkward stage. I definitely want to grow all my hair out and one day have a beautiful flowing mane but should I wait on it a few months? I'm interested in hearing thoughts.

Back when I went to college (early 1980s), colleges didn't interview you, nor did they care what you looked like. They looked at your GPA and SAT scores. You simply applied and waited to see if you were accepted.
If you have a good GPA and solid SAT or ACT scores...you're in! If you have the right grades, it doesn't matter if your hair is a rainbow striped afro, a mullet with a smiley face shaved on the side, or a green mohawk with pink tips!
I've never heard of a college interview. Is this a new phenomenon?

Some schools, especially the more "hoity-toity" ones have been doing interviews for years. Remember the movie "Risky Business?" My guess is more schools are doing it now out of self-importance.

I think it was just my dad'd scare tactics. I just wanted to check with you guys. I think I'll keep it growing then.
Thanks.

I know some colleges offer interviws, not sure any require them. The interview is also a chance for the student to find out more about whether the college would be good for them. I don't know about something like business school, but I've never heard of any college caring at all about a student's appearance in making admissions decisions for undergrads.

I think they do interview for more serious courses, like becoming a police officer and stuff like that.

You may need an interview if you plan to go to an exclusive private college --- but then I think the $20,000 a year tuition should be your greatest concern. Also, interviews and essays are commonly needed if you apply for scholarships. I would avoid the exclusive private college route even if you have the money. They basically train you to be an elistist, arrogant person, as that is what all the people there will be like. I only went to public universities (right to a Ph.D) and worked with the best-known people in the best-known schools. Yes, as a freshman, you will have large classes. However, the most valuable thing to learn at university is how to learn and interact with others. Keep an open mind. This is best done at a place where people from all walks of life go. (If in the USA) state universities typically have very bright people, just not the richest people. Interviews not required.

I was interviewed for a very exclusive (only 10 freshman) English Literature program in February and was accepted within a few weeks. I went to the interview (if I remember correctly) with my hair neatly pulled back, beard combed out, and earrings in. The only mention of my appearance was that I would fit in perfectly on campus!!
BTW, it is a public school, but the Honors Tutorial College that I'm enrolled in has small, attentive classes, and features many of the elements of a more expensive public school for half the price.
Although I can't tell you how every interviewer is, I know that mine was more concerned about my views on literature, modern gender perception (a shared research interest), and my SAT scores (was blessed by a pretty darn good score in the Language section) than my personal grooming.

Congratualtions on the acceptance into the collge you wanted to get into. Sounds excellent. Great to hear the beard and earrings were cool.

Thanks man!
I'm a lil apprehensive about next year, though. I'm going to culinary school, and they have anti-hair/beard/earrings policies.
