Question about curly/thick hair
Posted by HappyPuppy on September 01, 2002 at 16:43:01: Previous Next
I've been wanting to grow my hair out for a while now, but I keep weenying out of it, because my hair's really thick and curly. So instead of going down towards my shoulders, it decides to see how far towards the ceiling it can get. I'm opposed to using any chemical straightener, or something that will damage or take the curl out of my hair permanently, but I would consider using a relaxer or something that's not permanent. Any suggestions? Any help at all will be appreciated. My most recent decision to grow it was inspired by Aragorn in LOTR. He's a total bad*ss. Any idea on how long it'll take to grow my hair that long? It's about 2 1/2 to 3 inches right now. Thanks. (Please don't question the validity of the word "weenying")

My hair is very thick and curly. At first, it was a hassle, because like you said, it seemed like it was trying to reach the ceiling. It's been 11 months now that I've been growing out my hair; it's been getting progressively better. It's not as poofy now because the weight of my hair is pulling down. Just hang in there, it will get better.

You may find that the solution to your problem is as simple as applying some gel. Make sure that it contains no alcohol, as that will dry your hair out and make it frizzy. I also have curly hair. I found that Dep level 8 really helped me get through the awkward stage.
Once my hair got long enough to tie it back, then I didn't really need so much gel anymore.

Ironically the solution is to grow your hair, as it gets longer and therefore heavier gravity will solve the problem.

Thanks for the help. I've also noticed that drying my hair with a towel and combing it right away takes a little of the poofiness out. And even though it only comes down to about the tip of my nose (when pulled) I'm having lots of fun just pulling it down into my face just so I can brush it away a few seconds later. So thanks again. I really think I'm gonna stick with it this time.
Also, I'm not sure if this happens with any other people, but I've noticed that when I wear a hat, after a couple hours, my hair is more straight, until I get it wet again. I don't know, maybe it's a superpower.
