Cool 9/11 Poem
Posted by Rokker on September 11, 2002 at 15:42:57: Previous Next
I personally don't believe there's a heaven or hell, and am not religious at all, but nonetheless, this is a very cool poem.....
Two thousand one, nine eleven
Five thousand plus arrive in heaven
As they pass through the gate,
Thousands more appear in wait
A bearded man with stovepipe hat
Steps forward saying, "Lets sit, lets chat"
They settle down in seats of clouds
A man named Martin shouts out proud
"I have a dream!" and once he did
The Newcomer said, "Your dream still lives."
Groups of soldiers in blue and gray
Others in khaki, and green then say
"We're from Bull Run, Yorktown, the Maine"
The Newcomer said, "You died not in vain."
From a man on sticks one could hear
"The only thing we have to fear.
The Newcomer said, "We know the rest,
trust us sir, we've passed that test."
"Courage doesn't hide in caves
You can't bury freedom, in a grave,"
The Newcomers had heard this voice before
A distinct Yankees twang from Hyannisport shores
A silence fell within the mist
Somehow the Newcomer knew that this
Meant time had come for her to say
What was in the hearts of the five thousand plus that day
"Back on Earth, we wrote reports,
Watched our children play in sports
Worked our gardens, sang our songs
Went to church and clipped coupons
We smiled, we laughed, we cried, we fought
Unlike you, great we're not"
The tall man in the stovepipe hat
Stood and said, "Don't talk like that!
Look at your country, look and see
You died for freedom, just like me"
Then, before them all appeared a scene
Of rubbled streets and twisted beams
Death, destruction, smoke and dust
And people working just 'cause they must
Hauling ash, lifting stones,
Knee deep in hell, but not alone
"Look! Blackman, Whiteman, Brownman, Yellowman
Side by side helping their fellow man!"
So said Martin, as he watched the scene
"Even from nightmares, can be born a dream."
Down below three firemen raised
The colors high into ashen haze
The soldiers above had seen it before
On Iwo Jima back in '44
The man on sticks studied everything closely
Then shared his perceptions on what he saw mostly
I see pain, I see tears,
I see sorrow -- but I don't see fear."
"You left behind husbands and wives
Daughters and sons and so many lives
are suffering now because of this wrong
But look very closely. You're not really gone.
All of those people, even those who've never met you
All of their lives, they'll never forget you
Don't you see what has happened?
Don't you see what you've done?
You've brought them together, together as one.
With that the man in the stovepipe hat said
"Take my hand," and from there he led
five thousand plus heroes, Newcomers to heaven
On this day, two thousand one, nine eleven

the poem is about the thousands of casualties from the attacks on the twin towers of the world trade center which occured on 9/11. '9/11' has become a quick reference to that event. i hope this answers your question.

When you say 9/11 do you mean the time? Or do you mean the block name? I am completely confused?

September is the 9th month. September 11 is thus written 9/11. In some languages they say "11th of September" and may write the numbers backwards to that. Thus, your mileage (or kilometerage) may vary.

It may be because dates are written that way, but also, that's generally what's done when two numbers come together into a word. We can put "long" and "hair" together and people see that with "longhair". If you put "24" and "7" together to get "247" it just doesn't work, so we write "24/7". Same for 9/11, and that is how we write numerical dates anyhow, but it's likely for the same reason.
By the way, if you enjoy technicalities, style books point out we SAY dates like "September 11th" but we WRITE them like "September 11". Just a quirk of English. :-)

Do you ever wonder why it was Sep 11 and not July 11? I mean, with so many Arabs working at 7/11...

The British SAY dates like "11th OF September," but they WRITE them like "11 September." Just one of the many quirks of British!

You know, I wasn't aware of that until I heard some newscaster say
: ...9/11
or was it
: ...9-11
on
: ...11th OF September
or was it
: ...September THE 11th
and that's when I became aware of the coincidence with the emergency telephone number!
More interesting trivia...

9/11 is also IX-XI in Roman Numerals. Nice symmetry for a tattoo, maybe? The Rev

And the average is 10. Now put that nice X in there like this: IX-X-XI

The odds on that happening are not as long as you might think: 1 in 1000 for a specific day. About 1 in 500 for 2 days (think last year and this year). It's about 50:50 in 692 days for the lotto result to match the day.

Have you been living in a cave for the past year?
Is there some reason you use "Anonymous" for your name? You can pick any word/name you want and no one would know you anyway...or are you just baiting us?
