"Wet" Look...

...Alright, where to start..?
Well, I've been growing my hair for going on 16 months or so now (even though it doesn't FEEL like it's been that long)...it's not even in length yet, because I'm waiting for my bangs to reach my shoulders before I trim it. What's more is that my hair is naturally curly, and 'poofy' at times. Now, I've tried the 'olive oil' thing once.. I liked the look it produced, but did not like how greasy it was, nor did I enjoy smelling like a fastfood resteraunt, so I'm not really up to sacrificing smell and feel for look.
However, this is where my problem comes up. I thought my hair would lay down if I straightened it out, so I tried out one of those heat-straightening-irons. It's like a curling iron, only the plates are flat. It straightens my hair fine, but my hair is still frizzy and dry, and it continues to stick up and out like nobody's business!
My hair looks best when I get out of the shower, etc... When it's soaked to the core. Any idea how I can get my hair to look like it's drenched after it's dried completely? I don't mind the curls, actually love 'em, I just need to learn how to make 'em look good. Another thought was to trim and see if maybe the hair stopped laying ontop of eachother in layers.
Any input is encouraged, and appreciated. It's been a looooong year with this hair thing, and I'm not about to give up on it now.
Thanks a lot,
Peace,
Shugo
PS (I'm looking for a few pics of me to use as reference, if anyone would like them)

The wet look is loved and cherished by the largest majority of long hairs on this board, deeply including myself, but that is one thing that has forever dumbfounded us all. There is no cloning the wet look exactly to make it last all day. None that I have ever found anyway. Some ways may get close but only last as long as water itself and then turn greasy. Now you could opt to carry around a pail of water to dowse yourself with periodically, but that would be crazy, right?. LOL! The "WET LOOK" stands in a universe all it's all, bro! A short lived momentary treasure at best! Peace!!!!!

Wet Look is very easy to achieve.
Drench your hair in water - ie stick your head under the tap while in the shower. Towel dry you hair, then take a nice amount of soft wax (I prefer soft wax as ahir doesnt become rockhard) or strong gel in your palm. Rub in hands to get it smooth then rake it through hair using fingers, making sure to rake from roots to tips and then tips alone all over, and style. Leave for maybe 20 mins then spray lightly all over with a strong hold hairspray to have it hold all day and into the night.
Do not try brush the product out, shampoo and condition out only.
As for Hair Straightener making your hair frizz and burn, you need to coat the hair with a hair moistouriser before using the straightener. Or you can rake a small amount of soft gel or wax through the hair and *lightly* coat with hairspray to hold the fly aways down after straightening to have smooth sleek hair all day.
The trick is to not use excessive amounts of product.

Thanks a LOT to everyone. I've not tried any of the sugguestions yet, but plan to start trying them out next chance I get. I'm sure that with all of this great input I'll not have too much trouble.
As for pics of my hair, I have to warn you all that for the most part my hair is always pulled back, or else I'm wearing a bandanna or something to keep it from being unmanagible (as it usually is)...
Here are some pics of me from this past summer(Well, all but the trenchcoat one...that was after this past Christmas), before school started back and all:

In the back? Well, in the back it's long enough for me to reach around my back and grab a hand full of the hair. I'll get a pic to show you soon, taken from behind to show how long my hair is in back.

For a reasonable facsimile of the "fresh out the shower" look, try Sebastian Collections "Wet." It's not greasy, but looks as if it were. You can get it at participating salons or beauty supply houses. It's not cheap, but then neither is good olive oil. Good luck.

You can also try Paul Mitchell's Waxworks. It can be kind of tricky to find the right amount to use (too little is ineffective, too much makes your hair brick-hard), but once you find a good balance, your hair will keep a good "wet" look throughout the day.
It doesn't work perfectly, but it works well enough. I've found it works best when applied while your hair is still wet. Fair warning, though: if you run your fingers through it or comb it after it dries, the look will vanish. Get it right the first time, then leave it be.

If you use canola oil instead of olive oil you will not have the strong odor. It's cheaper, works just as well, and doesn't stink.

I like the "wet" look too, though I've found that most longhairs don't seem to like it. I've found that some of the leave-in conditioners can work well. Also, sometimes I just wash my hair without using shampoo. The natural oils seem to let my hair keep the "wet" look for quite a while. For a pic, check out www.facelink.com/longhair511
I would enjoy seeing a pic of your hair, to see how it looks.

When you get out of the shower. Just pat your hair dry with a towel to stop the major dripping. Then while it is still wet. Work a GENEROUS amount of non-alcoholic gel into it, I like DEP level 8. Then comb or brush it all through your hair. Style as you desire. Then just let it dry without disturbing it. Don't brush it out after it dries or you will ruin the look.
