very short to long

I'm an early twenty-something male looking for some tips on going from a very short haircut (#2 on top, #1 on sides and back--buzz cut), to longer hair (chin length or below).
I realize that growth won't happen overnight (I've been growing it for several months since my last cut). I imagine the best way to begin growing is to just avoid cutting it, altogether.
How often should I trim my neckline? Should I trim it at all?
Any advice from someone who has done something similiar is appreciated. Drop me a line!
Thanks.

I recomend against trims until your hair is the length you want it. However I warn you that long hair is addicting and you may never want to get it cut again! lol

sounds like you're going to get a BOB! GREAT!
My suggestion is cut as seldom as possible but as often
you need to don't feel ugly.
My experience about the growing of my own hair is,
if I wait until I feel ugly, I tend to cut off all my hair
and after this ultimate action I allways asked me why I did this.
So just go to the hairdresser if you need to get some shape
and feel good all the time you're growing your hair.
Best wishes
Ben

I started with 3/4 inch on top and skin on the sides and back. I would suggest that you just stop cutting and grit your teeth. You will be your worst enemy as it relates to cuts. There are countless people on this board that stated they regretted a trim or cut. If you truly want it long, in as little time as possible, you gotta hang tough.
In my particular case I am growing it out for a second time, my hair is straight, there were a number of transitions that I had to endure, and this was DURING the dreaded awkward stage. There is another after that, but it is in no way shape or form as painful.
Best of luck to you. Keep us apprised of your progress. I think it would encourage the ranks and entertain the vets.
ANOTHER AFTER dreaded awkward stage?

To me(straight hair)the awkward stage ends when your hair is between the ears and chin level. At this point it is laying down very well, does not have the poofiness, looks fairly decent, but not quite tailable. Yet, it still does not look quite "right".
The other stage I am referring to is when when you can get the back half into a tail and there is not much else you can do with the top and some of the sides.
Maybe to some people, the awkward stage ends when they can tail it in entirety. To me it ends when the sticking up, poofiness, unmanageability ends...then it is just a short distance(second stage) to looking "right", but at that point, you won't mind it much. Take Treyn for example. I think he is past the awkward stage and he is in the second where it is not quite "right". You don't hear him complaining much these days about the awkward stage, cause it looks decent.
Just for kicks, how many out there know what I am talking about? (sorry for long post)
O, so the 1st AWKWARD is WORSE!

I too am growing my hair out from a very short buzz cut all over (1/8"). The best thing is just grow it. Mine has gone in and out of awkward stages, it will look good for a couple of weeks and then like hell for a couple of weeks. I have a friend shave my neckline every couple of months, but otherwise nothing. My last buzz was June 01, and it still can't be pulled into a pony tail although VERY close. Just hang in there and be persistent.....peace

I used to have a high and tight, so I know where your coming from. When I decided to let my hair grow, I never cut it. The only trims I do are the occasional neck shaves to get rid of that downy "hair" that grows at the base of my head. I hate that stuff. It's always getting pulled and just looks nasty and bushy.
Anyway, that's my advice. Never, never cut your hair until it reaches the lenth you want, and then only to keep it from getting longer than you want. Don't trim it to neaten it up or any of that. If your growing hair gives you fits, wear a hat. That's what I did and it worked out fine.
Check out the following link for more info about growing it out...
This has got some good stuff. Section 4 is a little preachy, but the other 3 sections more than make up for it.
Enjoy,
The Rev

Get a hand mirror. When it looks bad, trim the neckline.

Just keep growing it. Each time you cut it you'll regret it if you want to have long hair!
