Dying hair

Anyone know if dying will cause damage to hair? I've got waist length hair (Recently I was able to sit on it for the first time, albeit only with my head tilted back, but it was the first time, and it let me know that indeed my hair has not yet reached terminal length.. it's so difficult to track it's growth anymore, that it really brightened my day, since it's my goal to get to at least mid-thigh, and preferably knee length (or even more if possible, but I won't get my hopes that far up just yet)
I am not considering bleaching at all. Just a color darker than my current (sort of a lightly tarnished bronze color). Thinking of going to a blackish purple, or a blackish crimson. As far as I can tell, I probably will not need to bleach. But will the dying itself do the hair any damage?

The safest way to dye your hair without worry of damage is to get a SEMI-PERMANENT DYE.
I've had my hair permanently dyed back about 7 or 8 years ago and it left it dry and brittle, almost strawlike.
With a semi-permanent dye, the color will slowly strip out over a period of 30-60 washes.....all the way back to your original color.
I'd also suggest not using any of those HOME DYEING KITS that all the kids use to constantly change their hair color.....go to a professional salon.

Dye damages hair. Hair dyes often contain ammonia and other harsh chemicals. Your better off keeping them out of your hair. Also, if you do dye it, then when it starts to grow out your stuck with two-tone hair unless you keep dying it, which means even more chemical exposure every couple of months or so.

Have successfully used fresh blackberries/raw egg/crushed peppermint, I kid you not, for a very cool, gentle dye that gives you a amazing dark purple/black. Yes, it washed out eventually. No damage, actually made my hair feel good. Try it on a braid. Good luck.

About what proportions of each did you use? And if you know, what roles do the peppermint and eggwhite play in the dye? I happen to have some frozen blackberries in the freezer (they're out of season for fresh ones now, unfortunatly). I do not have any peppermint, however.

I was living in Marin. A bowl of blackberries, egg yoke, some crush fresh peppermint. Just go with it. All fairly natural. Do not remember why, it just worked. All the skater bois/punks/hippies used this formula. We all just did. Some freak invented it, and we all liked it. Not to permanent. It did wash out eventually.
Good luck, send a pic of results.

You can dye your hair. Since its the ends that lighten up you can even the color up and not have to do it again for a couple or several years. Doing it that infrequently won't do much if any damage at all. Just go to a decent hair salon where they know what they are doing and can match it up properly.
