i've been growing my hair for a year this month (from a crew cut)
its been hard........
and very frustrating, i have been tempted to cut it so many times.
but i have stuck with it.
i just surfed my way in here and have spent the last hour reading the back posts and would like to say thankyou for the information and encouragement.
my awkward stage seems to be lasting forever, but the length is getting to a point where gravity is winning! (about time too!)
:)

That "awkward" stage lasts but a few months. Don't worry, you'll be past it before you know it.
What is "awkward" stage anyway

I got a quesiton: how does awkward stage look like, and when is it expected?
My hair is very thick and it alwayslook awkward if I don't wash it everyday(condition only+shampoo once a week). My bangs are about my ear level now, and my back is now actually better then before(less wavy more straight) and i'ts about 1"-2" longer then my bangs.
Did I pass awkward stage completely, without even knowing?

The awkward stage happens when hair is just long enough to be considered long, yet still short enough to be more annoying to the individual than attractive to anyone else. The ends of your bangs are level with your eyes and tend to want to stay there, the back wants to flip up, creating a sort of "duck tail", and the whole head of hair is simply next to impossible to keep styled without a can full of hairspray.
If you have thick hair, your hair wants to stick out like a Chia pet that's been plugged into an electrical outlet. If you have thin hair, it just... sort of... hangs, no matter what you try to do with it.
My solution was to slick everything back and dowse it with enough hairspray to make it look like I was literally wearing a piece of plastic on my head. I didn't begin wearing my hair down again until after my hair had reached the top of my shoulders and my bangs had grown past my chin.
As I recall, this period of my growth actually lasted for about a year (had to ask my wife, to be sure). I was completely off earlier when I suggested allowing 2-3 months for it to clear up.

Hey thanks for a quick reply,

I hope so, I don't think I can last a year with this kind
of awkwardness that you described :)
I think what helped hide my awkward stage was my hair type:
It's thick and it feels like it has some natural gel build
into it, because my hair will just keep it's form the way
I style it, be it sideways/forward/back.
This also means when I wake in the morning I have an AFRO from all the turning I do at night, but a quick shower brings everything down,
I don't even have to use a comb to make it look neat/tidey, just a slight brush with my hand and it's done.
