shampoo/conditioner buildup

Years ago a barber told me to rotate shampoo & conditioner brands so that I don't get buildup. I'm not sure what that meant or if it is even relevant if I only use shampoo/conditioner once a week. What is buildup and what does it do?

After a long time of using the same shampoo & conditioner, the residue can start to build up in your hair making it look kind of flat & have no bounce. Also if you scratch your head you can sometimes get gunk in your fingernails that may seem to be dandruff or flakes but its actually buildup.
Purpose of clarifying shampoos

Is that what clarifying shampoos are for? To get rid of the buildup?

You can use the same shampoo and conditioner for 50 million years and get no more buildup than you would by rotating.
If you completely rinse, the use a conditioner or creme rinse afterward, you're okay.
This whole idea of the same shampoo craeting buildup and by switching shampoos it won't happen is so nonsensical that pure common sense should tell you it's garbage.
Come on people...THINK!
that's what I thought

I figured buildup wouldn't happen if they were completely rinsed out. Plus, with washing every day with just water, any buildup would break down and wash down the drain within a week. Since I've NEVER had my hair loose bounce in 30 years, I'm thinkin shampoo/conditioner is an old wives tail if u use em right. Thanx for the feedback guys!!

Yeah, what they really are, what guys who refinish furniture would call them, are "strippers". But no one would buy them if they called them that. :-)
I'd buy a "stripper"
