I'm at the one year stage (some of you may have seen my recent progress pic) I have very wavy hair, which doesn't bother me however it seems as if the hair strand have absolutely no weight, if messed up (and my hair is EASILY messed up) they will not fall back into place on their own. For example, I can shake my head up and down about 3-4 times and end up with an afro (i literally mean an afro, not just a bit "puffy") I hate this so much. The other day I was playing around with a girls hair (she doesnt have long hair, it's almost like mine) and it was so soft, no matter how much i messed with it it just fell right back into place... is there any way possible to get my hair like that? I'm not trying to straighten it just have it be able to move around and fall back in place instead of turning into a giant cotton candy. I take very good care of my hair so it is not damaged, I would hate to have to get dreadlocks or be one of those guys whose only option is to wear their hair tied back. (As you can see, no matter how horrible my hair, i refuse to cut) So any tips or ideas?

I have almost the same problem. Like if I run my hand through my hair, the strands all repel like they have static electricity, and random sections of hair just stick straight out and will NOT lay down until I twist it back into the wave it was in before. Also if I shake my hair around like while headbanging, I might as well accept it as an afro until the next time I wash it. Unfortunately, besides damaging chemicals, I dont think theres a solution except waiting for it to get longer. My hair is about 5 or 6 inches currently and gets better as it grows but not much. Eventually though when exiting the awkward stage it will be too long to stand up, and the weight will pull it down towards the floor.

Oh, well if you're right then I'm happy, I thought this was something that I would always have to live with. I don't mind "toughing it out" through the awkward stage if it won't happen when its longer.

Tim is right. Equate hair LENGTH with WEIGHT.The longer your hair, the more it will weigh--and eventually become too heavy to remain an afro when messed. Blacks can grow the awesome afros which retain their fluff "forever" because their hair growth pattern is a kinky curl. Yours, however, is a soft wave. For that reason the weight will eventually take over.

Aussie Natural Gel added to yout damp hair will relax it until
it gets longer and the weight of the hair takes over...
Aussie MOIST conditioner also helps your hair.

I don't have any real advice to give you, but you described my hair as well as if you were here looking at it, so, at least you're not the only one with that problem (=
I hope BRgallagher is right.
Try this...

Well, you could try a little bit of hair spray. I generally use a small amount every day to hold down the "flyaway" hairs -- although I pull my hair back in a 'tail. I use "Rave" (#4 - the strongest) because it's cheap and effective [the pump bottle]. Experiment to find out the amount that works for you. Be careful! This stuff is very strong. If you use too much your hair won't move in a hurricane. However, water is quite effective if you use too much. Later.
