Long hair after 40

Hello everybody!
My name is Peter, I am living in Budapest and I have long, bown and very thick hair.
I am groving my hair since 1987, and since 1990 I never cut and trim it. Lenght of my hair is 135 cm
( it is below knee-deep lenght ! ). I like my long hair, but the washing and drying time is very long ( 2-3 hours). After drying the comb of the hair is very difficult and hard.

Maybe you need a good de-tangler and perhaps a little trim?

Please don't trim anything. I have hair that long
but my solution to tangles will never include a trim.

What do you do with split ends then?
Hair that has been around that long gets pretty rough at the ends (uneven, splits, thinning, loss of color).
I've been growing mine since '88 and I get trims on a regular basis but can't imagine not doing any mantainence on it. Mine is not quite down to my knees yet but getting close (that's with trims). Peter J's length sounds consistent with the growing time he mentioned sans trims but the ends must be in awful condition which may be part of the problems he mentioned.
I'll bet that Peter might be able to find a better conditioner or other product that could help in combing out his hair. There may not be a real good supply of stuff in Budapest.
