Reason for shampoo more often...?

I wash my hair w/ shampoo + conditioner once every 6 or 7 days, on average. Since I've had it with trying to put on an appearance to appease others, I don't mind the fact that some of my hair strands begin curling up quite considerably after going 3 or more days w/out washing (This phenomenon is especially prone to happen at the back and sides of my head, not so much the front). I have, however, started to wonder about how healthy a practice this really is... From what I understand, allowing one's natural oil to manifest itself within the hair over several days is the best way to keep hair strong (so as to avoid the dryness that comes with frequent washings). Isn't it true, however, that while that oil builds up as the days go by, dirt settles into the scalp which may bring about unwanted effects (clogging pores/hair folicles? I'm just guessing here). Bascically, my concern over more frequent washings came from the realization of why I'm to wash my face several times a day and not just once a week: Wouldn't that all the dirt that builds up have some kind of negative effect on the epidermis (after all, it's only a few inches away from the facial area that you're encouraged to wash daily)?
