About genetics/baldness..

I'm only 17 but looking ahead. I heard somewhere that your moms father is usually what you will end up like, is there any truth to this? I always figured it was random. My mom's father is around 70 and has some baldness, other than that i think almost everyone in the family has full heads of hair. I have more features in common with my dad than my mom anyway, especially when it comes to hair. My dad, his dad and myself all have very wavy, sluightly frizzy hair while my mom and her dad have straight hair(and btw my grandpa on my dads side is around 75 and still has a full head of hair) I'm not really concerned but just wondering if the thing about your moms dad determining what you will look like is true?
I'm no scientist, BUT...

From what I understand, the reason why your mother's father is the determining factor is because the gene for hereditary baldness is a recessive one, and those only come out every other generation or so in a specific pattern. Maybe one of the more biologically-oriented members of this board can expound on this.

Nope, not true. The thing about your mother's father is wrong. It is the combination of the genes passed from your mother and father that will determine your propensity for MPB. But alas, now we have drugs to prevent such things.

If there’s someone who knows about baldness, it’s me. I started losing it on top about 15 years ago. It didn’t really bother me up until last year when it started making me look really old. Every time I looked at myself in the mirror, I wanted to scream. Then my girlfriend suggested I get a hairpiece, which I did. Refer to a previous post for the whole story.

I did quit a bit of research on the matter. Mark (with a K) is right. Baldness is hereditary and usually comes out every other generation. My grandfather on my mother’s side was completely bald at a very young age. He only had 2 daughters, but had he had sons they probably would not have been bald. I have 2 brothers, Paul & Bob, both younger than me. Paul is 39 and he has lost almost all of his hair. He shaves whatever he’s got left. Bob on the other hand, has the physical traits of my dad. No one is bald on his side of the family He has 7 brothers (3 have died) and all had thick wavy hair. So did his father and uncles. So Bob has full thick wavy hair which he wears longish.
So Paul and I are the unfortunate ones to have inherited the recessive gene from our mom. Paul shaves and I wear a hairpiece to hide the egg. Funny world, isn’t it?

Heh, I'm 19 and have also been forced to think about this. My Mum's father is pretty bald while my Dad's father is well into his 70s, still has a full head of hair and isn't even completely grey yet! What luck, eh? :)
Still, flaunt it while you have it, drink loads of water and hope for the best... then start browsing through hat catalogues - seems to work for my bald Grandfather :)
