Is it better to wash with cold water?

I've heard it's better to wash your hair with cold water as you get a better shine and hot water may damage your hair. Is there any truth to this, and if so, how cold does it have to be?

Yes, you want to set the water at the lowest temperatur you can bear. I usually set it at around room temperature. I've also adapted to showering with the water this cold. Hair is not sensitive, so it's also a good idea to bend over, and have a final rinse of the lower half of your hair with cold water after washing it.
Warm water dissolves the natural oil from your scalp. This is not a good thing, as this oil helps protect your hair and preserves its shine. You can use add-on products as a substitute, but they're never as good as your natural oils. Furthermore, warm water opens the hair folicles, leaving the shaft vulnerable to damage (including breakage).

I guess that means submerging your head in a hut tub/jacuzzi is practically suicide for one's hair...

As cold as you can bear - it's very good fun :) I usually lie underneath the bath tap after washing my hair and run the cold water. I did it just a few hours ago, it was especially fun since it's so cold over in London right now!
Ah well, just think of the crazy Samurais who used to dunk their head in a stream at the coldest time of the year just to keep themselves alert. Jeez...

Hello,
cold water is better because as you rinse out the remaining
conditioner, you are taking your natural oils with it...and this
can really damage your hair and make it dry and brittle...those oils
are the best thing for your hair,it coats your hair and promotes
good healthy growth, hot or warm water makes the oils from your scalp
thin or virtually stripped away.it is good however to use hot water
when you get an oil build up like no other,or for deep conditioning.
wash hair once every three days while growing your hair...
steve.

: It is and I'll tell you why..Cold water causes the cuticle of the hair to constrict. Thus leaving the hair surface smoother and shinier. Of course the latter does depend on your general health and habits as well. Smoking, bad diet do not help the situation at all.
Hope this helps,
Dan
