Awkward stage: Couple of ?'s

I have a couple of questions about the awkward stage.
1. When exactly is one considered to be out of the awkward stage? In other words, how do you know you've passed it?
2. Based on your experience, how long did the awkward stage last for you? I've been growing for almost 15 months now and it still feels like I'm in the awkward stage.

I think the length of the awkward stage depends on the hair type and the individual's opinion on what is still 'awkward'. From what I remember its usually 9 inches (or the minimum to make a decent ponytail) to be past the awkward stage.

Absolutely! Curly/wavy hair makes the awkward stage seem insurmountable. *Sigh*

The awkward stage for me was over when I at last believed that I would not change my mind and get my hair cut! Or perhaps the stage is reached when others have got used to your long hair.
To those who disapprove of long hair on men, 'over the collar' length hair is probably just as bad as an 18" ponytail!
Cheers, Barry

hmmmmmmm, well, if 9 inches is the exit point for
the Awkward Stage...
and THAT point is reached at 18 months and...
you are alreay at 15 months then...
ummmmm...maybe you will reach it in about 3 months?
Still, everyBuddy's hair is different...

I'm 41 and I'm STILL in an awkward stage I think.
OH! You were talking about HAIR, weren't you? heh. Actually, I think I'm still in the awkward stage there too!

I think my awkward stage lasted about 6 months. That was the period between being able to deal with my hair as I always had and being able to get it into a pony tail. At the end of that period, I was able, with the help of gel, etc. to get it into a ponytail and keep it there for the work day. After that I felt like I had passed through. This six month period had at least 3 or 4 months before it when my hair was growing out in which I could still treat it as I had before, and it had a perod of probably another 6 months or 9, after it when my hair was still growing long enough to really be in the ponytail without a lot of chemical help holding it there. I just passed my two year mark this fall, and my hair is at mid shoulderblade length with the sides almost caught up with the back. I have done two half inch trims along the way to take care of rough looking ends and to allow the sides to catch up.

Congratulations on 2 years growth!

That's great! And good encouragement for others, too!

A little birdie will show up on your window sill and chirp it to you.

I'm at 17 months and just starting to feel comfortable with my hair. I just got my first post-grow-out cut, and I can almost keep all of my hair back in a tail now. It's nice. :)
