What Kind of Undercut Should I Get?
Posted by Dan on January 12, 2003 at 17:20:48: Previous Next
I've read this board for a while now and grown my hair for even longer, and quite frankly my hair looks goofy.
It seems that 99% of the people who's hair I like tend to have an undercut, i.e Kurt Cobain (Yes, the anti-christ of hair)and Jerry Cantrell.
Basically I want to be rid of the hair at side of my head and do something to the back to get rid of that mullet look.
My question is what should I do to the back?, should I just get it trimmed or get an undercut that goes all the way round?
I mean surely if I get an undercut and don't like it, by the time it grows back the rest of my hair will be so long it will look okay right?
So that's two questions.
1.What advice can I get on the undercut?
2.Will it make that a big a difference in the long run?

I wouldn't reccomend getting any kind of undercut. Most people who get them wind up not liking them. And most wind up cutting all their hair. I myself have tried it a few times and didn't like it very much after a while. It's kind of cool for a while, but you get tired of it pretty quick. But that's just my opinion, you do what you want. It's your hair. :)
By the way..Since when does Jerry Cantrell have an undercut??

In the video to Anger Rising when he's headbanging it looks like he's had the side shaved a little.

Not everyone! There is a rare select group (of one maybe?) that
actually likes having an undercut.

Really...I've never seen Cantrell with an undercut.
I agree as well....do NOT get an undercut. Not only do they look a bit "white-trashish" in my opinion...you'll be like everyone else I know and eventually hate it and regret you got it.
I think undercuts look absolutely ridiculous. May as well have a mullet!

I have also been thinking of getting an undercut lately, i've asked quite a few people and i've basically gotten a 50/50 response (seems like once you get it you will either love it or hate it) My reason for getting it is that my hair is really thick. Do you have really thick hair? Or are you doing it just b/c you like the look? The reason I ask is b/c I feel that the people who have said they hated it and cut all their or started over felt this way b/c they did it for the look. Take me for example, if I do get the undercut and don't like it.. well I don't like my hair w/out the undercut either so it's not such a big deal and certainly not worth growing out all over again. Either way, start off small and go from there.

How long is your hair? The chances are, your hair will start looking good once it gets longer. If you have an undercut now, and still dislike the hair, you've gained nothing, yet you're doomed to have an undercut untill your hair is long enough to cut it to the same length without losing all your hard-grown hair...
I would say the better reason to get an undercut, is because you like the look. If you get one because you think it will improve how your hair hangs, you will most likely be dissapointed. If you like the look, then you like the look...

..That the best Undercut is to not get one at all. Trust us on this one. It's a lose-lose situation.

I agree, I used to have one but soon regretted it. I had an extreme undercut, everything shaved to the scalp except the top. I did it because my hair is thick and I wanted thinner hair. I admit, it felt really cool at first, the feeling of having the long hair hang down against your scalp but I soon grew tired of it. I felt like an in betweener, half longhair, half short hair. There's also only so much you can do to your hair with an undercut. I ended letting the underneath grow for awhile and then cut a considerable ammount off of the top and let it catch up to the same length. It's now over 19 inches long and now I really enjoy the thickness and extra body, it's really rewarding. I have my before and after pic up top that I posted awhile ago. The first one is from a couple of years ago with the undercut and the second one is my most recent photo.(Once again, just disregard the knife in the pic because it was just taken as a joke!lol)
