Lack of respect for longhaired men!! Sick of short haired idiots telling us to get our hair cut. Unfortunately because I need to get a job I had to cut it short but if I get this dream job of mine at this distrubution center in Hopkins, MN I will grow it back and never cut it again except for the ends. People need to stop harassing us guys who like to wear our hair long and telling us to cut it!!!

Unfortunately, if it were to be a different kind of minority, for some reason there would probably be a law against it..........strickly enforced at that! Actually it is a rather pitiful commentary on society as a whole today. Just think.....with the enormous problems facing the world today, to take time to worry about how one grows their hair seems rather pathetic for the plight of the world. I DO HOPE that after you get that job you are not suddenly harassed into cutting your hair if your choice is to wear it long. If so, I would be rather inclined to seek another and NOT CUT for them. Good luck and best wishes.

Amen Brother!!! I have been pondering that very thing for about 15 years now & still have not come up with an answer nor a reason why. Can you people that look down your noses at me just be like me and have the attitude of live and let live?! Didn't your mother's ever tell you to never judge a book by it's cover?! Have you ever heard of giving a person a chance and giving that person the benefit of a doubt...and when the day comes when that person has proved you wrong...then you may pass judgement if you so wish. I just don't understand the attitudes at all - there are a ton of people who are fine with it, but then there a ton of people who are still way too conservative with their "suit & tie" attitudes...and those are the ones that are more than happy to look down their noses at you and do not care if you notice their disapproving attitude at all...in fact, I think they get off on giving you the attitude.
How 'bout this...what's on the cover of all the romance novels? You got it - a long haired "Fabio" type of guy. Who reads these romance novels? You got it - the wives of these "suit & tie" guys that look down their noses at you. Sure, their man may take care of them financially and so forth, but what they dream about is a hunky Fabio type of guy with LONG HAIR!!! So, if you want to keep that in your head to make you feel a little better about yourself the next time some "suit & tie" cops an attitude with you, then go ahead...me personally, I get bent out of shape a few times but I also have just learned to let most of it simply roll off my back.
As for jobs...it's not what you know, but who you know!!!
The best thing to do is keep up with good / clean hygiene and have good manners and carry yourself well...and simply roll with the punches...if you look like a loser - you'll be treated like a loser so the hygiene part is very important from what I have seen in circles.

I'n a lot of cases yes! But I am very close to landing to good job in Hopkins, MN and I assume that they won't have a problem with long hair. This place is a union job. My dad, a retired self employed medical doctor tried to convince me that having long hair would cost me lots of job offers but said once I get a decent job that I would be able to get by with wearing it long even though he doesn't really approve of long hair!

Yes I know that and I always tries to look and act my be a a job interview. The problem is that many employers (nor all) will discriminate against long haired men much more than short haired one. I myself if I am an employer would NOT judge people with long hair and actually more likely would hire a long haired man over one with short hair just simply because most of my closest buddies (BTW I am straight) have very long hair and seems to have better experience with getting treated with respect one from ones with short hair. Most men with long hair seems to have a more friendly easygoing attitude and not that "mine doesn't stinks but yours does!" attitude.

So you want long hair, then you cut it short to HOPEFULLY land a job?
HUH?
Bad move either way. Bad move to cut it, and even worse to HOPE to get a job.
If you want long hair, you keep it. You don't cut to try to get a job. You obviously didn't like enough to keep it.

My opinion is that employers should hire people for their skills and qualifications and not just their appearance.
I wonder if they realize that some long haired men might be some of the best workers available? I have seen men with long ponytails in places you would not expect and they were some of the friendliest people dealing with the general public.
And if you cut your hair just to get a job how do you know they are going to want you to grow your hair long?
I work for state government and we do have a general dress code but nothing is mentioned about hair length because it can be classified as discriminatory. All they care about is that we look nice and clean and get our work done.
If you want long hair maybe you should ask them what they think of long hair on men in your interviews because I know that most men who are wanting a job and long hair is wondering that. Who knows, maybe they would admire you for your guts and honesty in asking a question like that. Hopefully they would give you an honest answer.
Good luck.

I am in a very promising position for getting this job. I will be taking the strength and endurdance test for this distribution job I've been wanting. I will be offered a job on the condition that I pass it! :-) I also have a feeling that they won't have a problem with me growing my hair back because it is a union job with the Teamsters union and this job will put my last union job @ Fingerhut to shame which paid me $12.42 an hour when I was laid off! The job @ SuperValu is a picking type job very similar to some of the work @ Fingerhut almost identical and top pay is over $21 an hour for a job that barely pays $13-14 an hour @ Fingerhut if you made incentive. My lonhaired friend Tom that used to work @ Fingehut with me use d to make $16-17 on incentive but he was one of their top 5 pickers IMHO!

I wish you the best of luck. I know how hard it is to get any job these days.
I guess I am one of the lucky people who have been in the same job for 15 years and I don't really have any worries about job security.

I had my job at Fingerhut for over 18+ which is longer than what you had in your position so I wouldn't trust your employer too much if I were you. But I do trust SuperValu better than Fingerhut since everyone has to eat so even if I would ever get my job back at the newly reopened Fingerhut it would be only $9.50 an hr with no benifits and still less security than I had before with the lack of a union. If SuperValu ends up hiring me and is happy with me as an employee they will have no problem keeping me as long as they keep treating their employees better than most places.
