FRIZZ!!

Alright.. I've been growing my hair for close to a year now, I guess. It actually might be over a year..closer to two.. Anyway. I've trimmed my hair once about five months ago, because in the back it was a few inches longer than the front, and it was adding to the "poofiness" of my hair. I have naturally thick, wavy hair.. Much like this month's current Samson Award Winner on the site.
My problem is this, and it's been the same since my hair got to be past my ears (it's now a little past my shoulders): I have failed in finding a way to prevent frizz. Aside from showering, shampooing and conditioning (if I've got the conditioner), then combing it, gelling it, and pulling it into a ponytail before it dries. I want to wear my hair down, and have it lay down...not frizz up. The more I b rush it, the worse it frizzes. I've tried straightening products, including the ever-present straightening iron, which works..but doesn't prevent fizz. Most other products I've used haven't worked very well..outside of the olive-oil therapy, which leaves me smelling like a french fry all day long.
So, how can I fix it? Any help would be appreciated. I don't mind having thick, wavy hair. I actually like the curl most of the time. It looks great when the hair is soaking wet, and it's fun to have. I just don't like the poof, and the frizz.. I'm desprately in need of help to this problem!

I have similar problems. My hair is a bit longer than my shaulders all around, however i tends to frizz, and sit just above the shaulders, "poofed" out :(
I've found two ways that work for me. If i leave my hair unwashed for over 5days, or so, the natural oils build up enough for it to sit more tidely... I guess other people have more oily hair than me, but i only wash my hair once a week in order to get this kind of control for a few days a week. The other way, is to use a leave-in-conditioner. I guess BrylCreem would achieve the same effect, however i find leave-in-conditioners work almost as well, but without making your hair all mankey...
You say you have to gell your hair into a ponytail? If you have shorter hairs from breakage etc, that won't go back, then the best thing to do is to push them forwards, and then behind your ears.

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to look into getting some kind of leave-in conditioner or something. Breakage is a whole other issue. I can't even shower my hair sometimes without it getting all tangled up horribly.. every time I comb it, it is garanteed to break or pull out.. which, I'm blaming on the frizz until I resolve it and see that the other problem remains..

I have very thick, semi-curly hair that is naturally very frizzy. I wash my hair every day, sometimes even twice a day because I run 4-6 miles daily and am a drummer by trade, so it gets too sweaty for me not to wash it frequently.
The solution I have found really works for me, but is pretty expensive. I use Loreal Curl Vive shampoo, which is pretty heavy and designed to smooth the frizzies. Then I do Pantene's Hydrating Curls conditioner. After I get out of the shower, I use Physique's Frizz Control curl cream. All three products are designed to add moisture and shine to the hair, and combined, they seem to weigh it down enough that it stays un-frizzy without getting slimy, sticky, or crunchy the way gels and sprays do. My hair looks and feels very soft and moves naturally with this combination, so I definitely would recommend giving it a whirl.
In fact even with jamming a hat on it constantly over the last two weeks, since it's been in 0-30 degree range here in Boston, it hasn't been frizzy, which has been amazing to me.
Oh, and don't comb it...just use your fingers!

Frizz is about making all the 'boys' get along nicely...
And to do that, they need to 'stick together' literally!
You say gel is added to your hair. Well, OK, but AFTER your
hair is in place, how about going over the top layer with gel
or something.
I use SPRAY gel to dampen just the top, frizzy layer. Then I gently
pat it down with my hands...
Good Luck

You say that the more you brush the more it frizzes. I had that problem. Just don't brush it. When you shower, simply comb it with your fingers and let it air dry after you get out. That might help. It's worked a lot for me. All I have to worry about now is the wind. Hehe. Good luck on taming your head.

What you need to do is after your hair is dry, get your gel. Then go to the sink, and wet your hands, then use your fingers like a rake to rake a little water through your hair. Then use a small amount of gel and do the same thing, raking it through your hair. Finally, lightly spray with hairspray.
The trick is to use the right amount of gel and spray, if done correctly you hair appears to have nothing in it, it will be frizz free, have a nice hold for the day, and depending on your gel/spray also be quite shiny.
