Is my hair the problem?

I am 46 and have long thick dark brown hair with some grey strands going through it. I am clean shaven and my hair is always tied back super neatly. I have been told many times that I look like big Steve Seagal, but I think better.
The problem is that I am out of work and am starting to feel like an outcast. I have been on job interview but with no success. I am starting to think it's me or my hair. Even my mother is saying that it could be my hair. Some guy I know has even said I am being un-Christian by having long hair. He said we live in a society that carries a lot of Christian values and having long hair is going against it.He said that when people look at a long hair person they see a rebel. {Guess he never viewed those short haired criminals at ENRON}. At times I feel as if I am going to run out and cut it.I am tired of the dirty looks from your ex-military dorks and old farts without a clue.I do not want to cut it, but I need work. That is, if this is what's holding me back. Is it my hair? I'm fading out fast.

Okay, you're obviously on the verge of hair suicide (cutting it when you dont wanna). To me, you appear to not want to cut it unless it will help you get a job, which may or may not be the problem. I'd advise you NOT to cut it. Or at least not yet. Do you know any other longhairs that work? Talk to them and see what they think. Cutting your hair is a definite last resort, but if you feel you MUST to put food on the table, well.. Just check ALL of your options first. You hair may not be the problem.

Hey don't say ex military dorks as they would give you problems. I and many ex military dorks immediately regrew our hair long after leaving the military.

Long hair = un-Christian? Any [supposed] Christian who would tell you that is a phony. This person is probably one that constantly judges people while saying "don't judge others lest you be judged yourself". A true PHONY.
Anyway, I think you should hold out and not cut your hair. I don't know what your line of work is; but in the technical fields long hair never seems to be a problem. My hair (almost half-back) isn't nearly the longest compared to some of the men that work there.
Good luck. Hang in there.

Your hair may not be the problem. The economy is so bad
right now that business is hunkering down for a long
depression. Not only are they not hiring they
are laying off all over the place.
I knwo many with short hair and lots of experience that
can't find a job to save their life.
In short, it's probably not your hair.
this is most likely correct

The state of things in the (world) US right now is such that finding a job is just about impossible, unless you happen to be a: teacher, construction worker, or nurse. You may just have to wrap your funds tightly around you until things lighten up. Don't think it has anything to do with your hair.

To say that it is un-christian to have long hair is one of the most trivial assertions I've heard as of late. If anyone seriously believes that to be true, they ought to impose the same standards on women as well as men. It's one thing to have ridiculous agendas based in God's name, but c'mon, sexual discrimination as well? How is THAT supposed to be Christian-like (and I mean that in a reasonable sense, as opposed to a Christian fundamentalist sense which is likely to refer to Genesis in an effort to deem women inferior to men)?

I would rather die than have my hair cut. Don't do it. I had my hair cut once and hated it so much that I lost a lot of my confidence and almost all my sense of identity, which can't be a good thing to go into an interview with. I have seen too many stories like this. You could have your hair cut and still not find it any easier to get a job. As well as being out of work you will have had a haircut as well which will make you feel worse.
I agree with LucksKind. If you can't please others then please yourself. I always respected people with long hair and still do. I never thought they were rebels, specially if their hair was as well maintained as it sounds yours is.

I've read all of the other responses that you have received to your post and I really cannot add anything that they haven't already said. The economy is in the tank right now, businesses are either holding tight or cutting their workforce back, you cannot simply go out there and "create" a job for yourself, etc. I presently have a job, but absolutely am bored to death with it! I have been looking for a new job since late February - early March of last year?! Sure, there are things out there to be had, but there are a lot of things that I - personally - have to take into account before I simply quit this job to move on to another one.
The point is this - just hang in there and things will start looking up once again...hopefully. You sound like a clean, well mannered, well kept, etc. type of person which really says a lot in your favor. It's not your hair...long hairs & short hairs alike are feeling the crunch of this terrible economy. What if you cut your hair and finding a job doesn't get any easier? I did this very thing my first year out of college...I cut my hair to be just like all of the other GQ phonies in the world and to this day have nothing to show for it...just because I cut my hair to look more "respectful" didn't make my phone ring off the hook with job offers from companies wanting to pay me hundreds of thousands dollars a year.
As far as the "un-christian" attitudes - there are a lot of christians out there...but at the same time there are even more "hypocrites" out there. Grow your skin as tough as your hair is long and just let it go. YOU are the only one that has to live in YOUR shoes.

Someday in my previous job my boss told me "why don't you grow your hair". Because of the company regulations I said. He told me "it's OK, grow it and I'll support you". I did. After the two years I prohibited to participate in a interview to hire new employees becaus e my image could give the candidates a bad impression. Funny because I was neat at extremes and my long hair always tied in a pony tail like you are. After that I reported my boss what happened (he was on vacation then) and he told me. "You must cut it right now". I was shocked because traveling around I saw my co-workers all over the world having long hair and I protested, but it was not fair. He told me to cut it or he would fire me. Well, I shaved my head, because between short hair and skinhead I prefered to be a skinhead. Three months later I was dismissed. That happended at United Airlines-reservations office in São Paulo, Brazil. I still love United and say it was the best job I ever had, but one thing is obvious for me:
I WILL NEVER CUT MY HAIR AGAIN BECAUSE OF A JOB. LIFE IS SO SHORT TO BE LIVED ACCORDING TO OTHER'S CRITERIA. I PREFER TO BE MYSELF.
And just to remind you Jesus was longhaired too, in other words he was following fashion in his time like everybody else was. By the way, I love Jesus and I know he loves me exactly the way I am. Don't be upset for not being allowed to be around those sick people. This week in São Paulo, Brazil, a "christian" plastic surgeon cut a woman in pieces and kept everything inside the trunk of his car. In front of his office was written "without Christ there will be no salvation", ah, he was short haired! Of course I am not talking agaisnt christians since I am one too. I'm talking against hipocrits!
Keep you hair long and enjoy it.

Right on Brother! It's about time someone made a stand!! Still some fundamentalists(sp?) claimed that it's a myth that Jesus has long hair but how do they know? Still what about that statement Paul made in 2 Corinthains and it being a shame that man has long hair? I don't get it? I don't have a problem with long hair and I am a Christian and yes I am growing mine back again!!
