My hair, and some questions..

HI,
I'm new here, just found this board via a Google search. My 'name' on the board is my online personae, the email is valid tho.
Since December 23rd of 2001, I have been letting my hair grow out. (I was going to get it cut that night, even though I had been wanting longer hair for a while before then, but the extreme rudeness of a stylist at Fantastic Sams put me off getting it cut there - I just decided to start it then.)
Currently, my hair extends down about 5 inches below the back of my neck, give or take. When I find my camera again, I'll post a pic for illustrative purposes.
I have been careful to avoid putting any 'sticky' styling products in my hair (All the harder to wash out) and I do not blow dy or in any way heat style my hair (heat damages hair, AFAIK) but nonetheless my hair is not as healthy or as long as I'd like.
I feel that my hair has a normal amount of oil, not too oily, not too dry, very dark brown, often mistaken for black. The hair often tangles in the morning when I get up, or after getting out of the shower in the morning. Also, if the day was windy I'll get tangles.
Until recently I didn't use conditioner, going on the advice of a former hairdresser that "conditioner was a waste of money". However, common sense took root as of about 3 days ago, and I bought a bottle of Infusium 23 Revitalizing Conditioner. After using it, I noticed my hair felt somewhat slicker, and easier to brush. (The brush being a wide toothed one, not a tightly spaced one.)
I'm looking for advice on what I can do to encourage my hair to grow, reduce tangles (which result in tearing as I grab the hair just above the roots to avoid tearing it out as I brush out the tangles.), and just in general get it looking nice, and not like I make a habit of experimenting with bare electrical sockets.. lol
Thanks..

Conditioners and even more imprtantly, LEAVE-IN conditioners are very important and not a waste of money. However, keep in mind you don't need to buy anything expensive. The inexpensive stuff usually works just as well.

When people grow their hair longer, they need to learn to brush backwards from the way they did when it was short. In other words, comb/ brush from the bottom couple of inches first and work your way up. This removes tangles gently. Once tangles have been removed, THEN you can brush from the top down. This will help prevent damage to the hair and pulling hairs out.

A hairdresser said that? Sounds like he/she worked either in the army giving buzzcuts or in some third world country like Bangladesh where a bottle of conditioner equals about a months pay.
