Combing hair back

Lately I've been trying to comb my hair back for a sort of messy look, sorta like that Joe Millionare. Well it's not really working, 'cause I don't wanna use any styling products. But today I stumbled across this picture, and I'm wondering if anyone here with wavy/curly, thick hair that's about that length can get their hair that way without using styling products. Thanks, and sorry if that last sentence was confusing.

Without putting your hair into a half ponytail, it's pretty much impossible. Although my hair almost naturally tends to go up, I have always had to use gel to get that kind of effect. I don’t understand, why are you so apprehensive about using gel? It's not that bad, just make sure to use a mild gel and not to use too much of it or put too much water in your hair before applying the gel. This way it can be almost unnoticeable, plus, if you run your hands through your hair once it's dry, you'll find your hair looks a lot healthier and still feels very good, although you will have lost the slicked back effect. Regards.
