Is THAT the message being taught in schools? What bull!
Just L(.)(.)K around...
Tattoos...Piercings...Hair Colors...Body Shapes in ALL sizes...
shorthairs...LONGhairs...and everything in between...
We do NOT all like the SAME things...do NOT like to go to the same places...
have DIFFERENT likes & dislikes...
Some people are NICE while others are just plain HATEful...
WE ARE ALL THE SAME? THINK AGAIN...
ARE WE ALL gifted in the SAME WAYS? NO! What about the UNsame people?
movie stars, rock stars, writers...
and people who are superb hunters, marksmen, fishermen, people who excel in sports...
WE ARE NOT ALL THE SAME...
and growing HAIR LONG is just another way of making that statement...

I couldn't but agree with you more. Perhaps this is not so wide-spread throughout the Nation and is limited to just the area I am in? (A portion of the West Coast.) You may be further interested to know that I only gave you the 1st part of the statement. The WHOLE statement is: "WE ARE ALL THE SAME AND ON THE SAME TEAM." This whole thing came about when the school system "hired" some University specialist(?)to come into the schools and preach this nonsense. Banners hang in the hallways showing happy kids. I tried my best to fight it..........but you can't win with this idiot School Board. "We have to be progressive" I was told. A talk with this University person that (at least to me) was making too much sense on my part sent her quickly running down the hallway as it was "claimed" she was in a rush to get somewhere. She had run out of all explainations, and, the more I said, the more nervous were her reactions. This person had RUN OUT of anything logical to say! I had struck too much of a nerve, and this was the reaction I received. There are a few parents who have not liked this..........but people being what they are these days don't really want to make waves, so just grumble to each other and let it go at that with hopes that the problem will somehow vanish by itself. On the happier side: There are a number of boys in this school showing signs of letting their hair grow. (Must be intentional.......has to be.) One 4th graders hair is 1/2 way down his back. Nobody seems to make fun of him. When talking with this University "expert," this is but one of the 1st things I mentioned. Response? "Oh, their parents are responsible to see that they get haircuts so as to conform." CONFORM TO WHAT I asked? (There was no answer given.) I truly hope this new educational experiment(?)will blow-over quickly. By the way, I always enjoy your writings in the Hyperboard. A pleasure to read. Thanks!
" haircuts to conform"...

"WE ARE ALL THE SAME" ??? HA!
What a FUNny thing to say in the Land-of-Movie-Stars & Celebrities...
" AND ON THE SAME TEAM" double HA!HA!
Until they become adults? Then it's pro-choice, pro-life, pro-war, anti-war.
and on the "Same Team" does that mean LONGhair is OUT or IN?
WHO gets to decide? 'The TEAM?'
o, I give up...

Well, you are definately on my team. I share your views 100%! I have to "give-up" when trying to talk to the admistrations. Their brains................wait, do they have any? I give-up also. There is an old saying: "To argue with a fool makes two fools." I will cease to argue (which I never did in the 1st place) nor try to "reason" with any of them again. If I had a wish granted to me however........I would love nothing better than for Luckskind to get on these idiots tails! You would give them the best run for their money they ever had........and well deserved at that! Hope you are enjoying a nice evening. All the best. Justin.

Well, i agree with your opinions, but i don't really think that wanting to not conform is a paticuarly good reason to grow your hair. Most "non-conformists" are as bad as the "conformists" for conforming. Look at goths for example. Whilst they believe they're rebeling against modern society, they are actually part of it. Yes, they're oposite to "mainstream", but they're still a part of modern society, and they still all conform to something.
A true non-conformist, wouldn't have to deliberately try to look or act different, in order to not conform :) By all means, i have no problems with "rebelious" people growing their hair, but if the only reason they do so, is to be "different", or to "not conform", then i have to laugh at them really.
I don't conform to trends or common beliefs, however this just means i feel i can have my hair however i want. If i wanted to have it short, in a trendy/popular style, that wouldn't be because i wanted to conform, but because i liked it that way. I have it fairly long, because i like it this way.
The whole "Counter-Culture" thing really annoys me... They take irony to a whole new level :)

Much as I appreciate the attempt to foster acceptance
with such a statement, I am entirely agreed that the
excution could be a little better. Reminds me of the
scene from "The Life of Brian", with a huge crowd
yelling in unison 'We are all individuals!' . Hehe.
I wish instead we could see "We are all differant, and
that's wonderful!"
Stormdog
'We are all individuals!' . hehe

I agree fully with all the posts below. However, what I always THOUGHT the statement "We are all the same" meant was that we are all people. HUMANS. In that sense, we ARE all the same, (I hope!). Our values, beliefs, looks, mannerisms, you name it, are all different and unique to each of us, but when it comes right down to it, we are all human.

How about this:
99.9% of all humans can grow hair (at least somewhere on their bodies) but not all hair grows the same.
If you phrase it to be about what hair does you won't have to butt heads as much about how personalities differ.
