American Idol: Messy Hair

I don't watch American Idol. I was "required" to watch it tonight. Didn't understand a thing that was going on. I did notice that the male host and one of the male contestants had messy, spiked hair. In my opinion it appeared to be a "just woke up in the morning" look. Is this a conspiracy on the part of international hair gel conglomerates? Is this a real trend?

They (for some reason) like that look. IMHO they're a bunch of yuppies looking for a (stereotypical) pop "star". Yeah; the world needs more pop stars -- NOT!
The only time I watch that show is to watch the [bad] tryouts. I find it boring after that.
