Question about balding
Posted by Goodwin on March 16, 2003 at 16:03:24: Previous Next
Hi guys. My name is Goodwin. I am 31 years old and live in Pennsylvania. Ive been growing my hair for 8 years, and it is midback length. That is whats left of it.
My hair has always been a little fine and thin, but two year ago I really started losing it. I am now almost completely bald on top except for some hair at the front.
I don't wish to do a combover or look like one of those bald/ponytail guys. My question is, is there ever such a time to accept the inevitable and let go of the long hair? I am no longer inspired by it and I am thinking of cutting it off. A friend who went through the same thing a few years ago said he cut his hiar and donated it to a charity while he still could.
What do you think? Should I do it? I'm thinking that it's time, but I'm apprehensive.
you answerd your own question

You ANSWERED your OWN question when you said
that YOU were NO LONGER INSPIRED by long hair.
Amen
Good Luck & do the right thing (for you).

Is there anyone who thinks long hair with a balding head looks good. I don't want to look like the father from Dharma & Greg. Still, I'm apprehensive to let it go.
I say keep it...

There was this guy I saw the other day while I was out on my furniture delivery route who was completely bald on top. Starting at the lower crown in back he had a braid that reached all the way to his waist. It looked awesome and I remember thinking that I greatly admired that kind of accomplishment for someone who was bald on top. My advice is to keep it the way it is, but that's just my advice. Listen to your heart, man. If I were you though I wouldn't throw away that much of an accomplishment. That is if long hair is still something close to your heart. Peace!!!!!

I myself am bald on top I look terrible with short hair. The only acceptable solution I have found (for ME) is to wear a hairpiece. Looks very natural (unlike a wig) and blends in with the hair I already have. See pics attached. All regulars on this board know my story & I don’t want to repeat it all here. Need additional advice, e-mail me; I’ll be glad to help.

Goodwin: I can't offer you definate advice, seeing as how I've no clue what you currently look like and what you once looked like w/out long hair... In any case, I'd stick with what you have. Having long, braided hair at the back will give you a very defined look, and that in itself is a goal worth attaining (provided, of course, that doing do will not hold you back from jobs and such, although such circumstance doesn't seem pending to your case). Personally, I'd do something to alter the receeding hair and just focus on maintaining the hair at the back.

Personally, I'd go for a buzz if I were going bald. Having long hair in the back while being bald on top looks pathetic to me. It's somewhat similar to a comb over. It's like saying: "Hey look again, I'm NOT really bald! I have some long hair left!" I have the nagging feeling that these poor souls are trying to cling on to whatever there's left without realising that everyone can plainly see that bald spot on top. Buddy, when it's time to let go, it's time to let go! I just don't think looking like a skirted egg shell is the way to go. There are plenty of balding guys with a buzz who look good with their current hairdo. Take Bruce Willis for example.

I say shave the sides too and braid the back. You can get that Jet Li Once Upon a Time in China pugilist look going and that's cool.

Maybe try growing a long beard or wearing a hat if they become popular again. As the baby boom generation starts to go bald, there may be many more alternatives to deal with baldness.
