Past the Awkward Stage!

Hey guys, I believe I'm past the awkward stage and I'm LOVING IT!!! Most of the time I wore my hair in a ponytail but, finally, the length of it now gives it enough weight to where I feel comfortable wearing it down. It isn't poofy anymore and I think it's great. The feeling you get when a breeze blows your hair gently across your face is awesome. A guy at work commented that I was "letting my freak flag fly," to coin a phrase from Jimi Hendrix!
I've wanted to be a longhair since I was a kid, but strict parents, strict bosses, and a dissapproving wife (now ex, I'm happy to report), have kept me from growing it out. I'm now at 1 year and 10 months...and counting! I will be updating my site in a couple of days and I'll put some progress pics there. I'll post when it's ready.
And for all you guys who are worried about the awkward stage I say "Fear not!" As I have found out for myself, just let it grow and eventually you'll be very comfortable with it. I know I am and I plan on growing it longer still. For the first time in a while I feel good about the way it looks without having to put it in a ponytail.
Good luck on your journey and, for God's sakes, LET IT GROW!
Great

I know exactly what you are talking about, I haven't had a ad or god wife yet, but for the rest I know what you mean. I wish I would have grown out years ago. Thankfully, I realised that at age 19, I'm about to turn 21, but I'd kill to get 5 years of my life back and grow it out.

total inspiration!Good for you for growing so long. (long to my standards anyway!) Im glad too hear there will be some good news for me in about another year or so. Im at month 7, and frankly, Im scared. I have curly/wavy hair like you, and hearing about someone getting out of the awkward stage is like a weight off my shoulders. (haha, I want the weight of hair ON my shoulders tho. :) )
Looking forward to pics by the way. *Jude goes back to lurking on the board...."

Be afraid, very afraid ... Month 7 huh? The worst is yet to come and I'm speaking from personal experience. The ones who have the least amount of trouble are those with straight thick hair. My curly/wavy hairtype was a recipe for disaster during the awkward phase and it took HUGE amounts of effort to make it look so so. On the other hand, enduring that sort of torture shows that you have a huge set of cojones (hey, you're looking ridiculous while BEING AWARE that you're looking ridiculous!) and once the awkward phase is behind you it's time to play!

I'll be at month nine in a few days. I have wavy thin hair thats messy at times and cool looking at others. It's so confusing! But I have all Summer to grow and then when I come back to school, I'll have chin-length and everyone will be shocked. That will be sweet!
Cheers.

You know, yo have a way to go through the awkward stage with dgnity and sporting something original.
I don't know what color is your hair and your skin, not that it matters to me, it does for this idea though.
When I was just starting growing out, I saw a blond guy in college with a huge afro. HUGE. It looked great and specially it caled everybodies attention. He eventually cut most of it, but as I had dyed my hair, for something temporal, but it turned out wrong (old and long story, never mind). I had the possibility of growing my own fro for going clubbing or so. You have no idea what an afro in a white guy can do. Nothing to worry about, you know, just while you go through the tribulatory times.

Ha haaaaa!!!!! I know EXACTLY where you're coming from, man! My awkward phase is history as well and it's very liberating, to put it mildly. I've been growing my hair for about 18 months before I arrived (my hair is curly so my awkward phase lasted much longer then if it were straight) where I'm at and I'm glad I endured the journey. It's like some form of graduation or something! The thing that I like the most is that I'm now getting compliments (especially from the ladies) whereas I used to be frowned upon during the awkward phase. I no longer need to use a dryer after washing my hair - it doesn't matter which continent I'm standing on. Oh yes, scissors and/or buzzers haven't touched my locks in 18 months, since I feel it's counterproductive. In my case anyway.
